This chapter was jam packed with a LOT of backstory. I had to read and reread the "facts" not otherwise in the "files" a number of times to untie the knots.
I think this sounds like criticism, but I do not mean it to be. It is those slanted references in tattered notebooks and a rookie cop with a good memory for a face that, it seems to me, would most certainly unlock a few otherwise permanently locked doors.
(Are you SURE you're not related to James Patterson??)
Check: ""I found it odd that our rookie's notes show he'd seen our dead stranger..." (showed?)

I wish! I have read more of his novels than I can remember and I wish I could write that good, but I am sure he has influenced my style.
-
He'd do well to read YOUR work...
It'd freshen his style up a bit!
-
Yeah right! Now I am rolling on the floor in laughter... except I won't be able to get up.
-
Ouch. I got down on the floor at the grocery store to get those last two cans of beans on sale...
Good Gravy Marie!
I thought I might stay there forever!
My knees are still aching!
Laugh...but be careful!
-
I need two knee replacements and a hip... forget bending over let alone getting on the floor. A chair is a trial and a half sometimes.

I'm reading in reverse, but the story is still capturing my attention. So, the cold case is all over a million dollars' worth of diamonds. That apparently means murder to end up owning them.

Hello, Carol
The cold case is about the jewelry heist but you will discover many other stories entwined (stories inside the story). I hope you enjoy and I thank you for reading.

Mafia bosses, gang wars, with interesting twists of romance here and there never ceases to amaze readers. This story is one exciting plot that will surely hook the readers to ask for more. This is indicative of the writer's creative gift. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Carol, I'm really worried about Sandy. She may be in for a reward by talking, but this Costello and his cronies can't be trusted. I just have to read on won't I? Hugs, Ulla:)))

Yes, allowing Costello to put her in his debt whether she chose it or not will not be a good move for Sandy. Our Charmer has a dark side and it could mean trouble.

What a fantastic first sentence (fireballs etc) to this chapter. It hooked me and kept me engaged throughout the chapter. I will have to go back and get caught up on the chapters I have sadly missed.

Happy! Happy! I worried that the reader might think it sounded weird to say fireballs shooting through the veins, but I am thrilled you felt the emotion. Thank you!

It seems I have some catching up to do with this one. I'm so sorry I missed the beginning chapters. I have always enjoyed your style, and this chapter was exciting regardless of the backstory. Best, JohnC

Nice to see you, John. I tend to be behind on everything lately so never fear you aren't alone. LOL glad you enjoyed this chapter.

Ah, but Emmy has already won his heart even before the pastries called to him. I guess they are starting to uncover the details that can lead them to the right people to question. But I doubt that Satan will talk.
Great job with Sandy's response to Costello. We cannot blame her for sharing everything she knew. Her life was at stake.

Glad you enjoyed the give and take of the relationships...some for the good and others not so much. I know I wouldn't want to help Peter but with your hand in the trap, it most likely would influence my response too.
Hugs. Carol

I'm really concerned for Sandy. Although she seems to have a handsome reward for talking, she'll likely be a target, maybe even by Costello and his thugs. Good story. The dialogue is realistic. Nicely done. Blessings.

Peter Costello is the charmer, but he was raised by a gangster who believed power meant success, so we shall have to see how his new friendship with Sandy develops.

Sally rubbed her hand as she watched them, thankful they were leaving. (Sandy rubbed her hand...)
I thought I'd start with the typo I knew you'd want to change. This is another riveting chapter. Hank and Emmy are looking at a lot of dead ends. It will be interesting to see how they turn nothing into something. I loved the detailed scenario with Sandy and her new best friend Peter. I had hoped she wouldn't mention diamonds, but she did the best thing to keep herself from being hurt. And she gained much needed money. Great job. See you soon.

Why is it that you caterers always have to start talking about food and making all us foodaholics hungry? I mean, pastries of all things to talk about. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, sorry about my delay in answering. I was busy making sausage mostaccioli smothered in mozzarella cheese with a side dish of sweet Italian sausage and spicy meatballs. Oh yeah and I forgot the pies. LOL Now it's breakfast, so should I whip up some cinnamon rolls or danish? Maybe eggs, bacon and hash browns would be more nutricious. Smiles and hugs, my dear friend, Carol

I'd weigh 600 lbs if I was around you any length of time. But I'd make a great ship anchor. LOL.

I love to cook, but I eat little of it after spending the day in the kitchen. Guess that's why I was a caterer....I could deliver it to someone else. LOL
