What a great story, and remarkable that you remembered it long enough to relate it here.
I am reminded of the Book of Mark 12:43-44, where Jesus and his disciples are sitting near the temple treasury watching people donate into the receptacles. They see rich people deposit good sums, but then a widow comes and deposits two small, copper coins, which made a penny, also called a mite.
Jesus called to his disciples, telling them that the widow had donated more than the rich.

This is such an uplifting message. I see how you were good at your job. You are also a very good writer. This is as good as Jesus's story of the widow's mite.

Because I read this while we were talking, I went back for a second look. Terry, it is well written-- certainly fits the season for giving and reminds us that perhaps the season for giving is year-around.
The reverse side of your story comes through as well -when one reads carefully-- Graciously accepting the small gifts for the given from the heart is giving in and of itself. Does that sense? Allowing others to give and graciously accepting the gift is indeed a gift of its very own.

You are a very generous and wise person. The value of giving is to give everything you can, the absolute value has no meaning. The value of receiving is knowing how to appreciate the effort that went into the giving rather than the number of dollars. I good receiver makes all givers feel equal. Kate xx

This reminds me of the story of the widow's mite in the Bible. Jesus said it was worth more than all other gifts because she gave all she had. Edward Kennedy's conclusion is an important one. A very well told story.
