While other branches of the US military have their stories of heroism, nothing can, nor should be allowed, or attempted to take away from the storied history of this legendary fighting force. It is next to impossible to imagine where we would be without them. Thankfully, we do not have to.

It is extremely well-written and cohesive, tells a wonderful, inspiring and patriotic story... the kind I simply can't resist, and comes to a perfect conclusion, rounding the whole thing out neatly. There is only one place I thought you might want to edit:

I have met former marines and the bond and pride of the Corp last even as they are grandfathers even great-grandfathers. You do them honor with this writing of the men and women that serve and have served. In every war, when you hear of sacrifice and victory, often it is marines on the scene.

For twenty years I buddied up with a dozen officer grade marines on a golf trip to Myrtle Beach. I, being a swabbie or squid, was given the call-sign SHORTY for being 6'6. One asset Marines seemingly lack is imagination. Were you a jarhead? In addition, I played basketball alongside three marines from the Presidential Command ship, USS Wright, that I captained to a championship in 1965-66. Sharpest unit in the Atlantic.
Lastly, this entry is very familiar to one I wrote for my golf friends with a history as written herein.

Oh awesome! Yes I was a marine from 87 to 92. Then retired as a Federal Agent. Currently do hospital watches for the US Marshals. This piece is holding its own in the contest. Good times my friend!

I salute you Douglas, for having served your country and defended us all. A good friend of mine served in the Marines. He's now almost 90 but strong as ever. His wife and I often joke he's like a cat with nine lives. So far he's spent 7 of them in the marines! So there you go..

Thank you. The vote is tight, but going well so far. I appreciate your family members service. I too was at that base and we just lost my 56 year old sergeant to cancer. Very scary stuff. Thank you for your kind review!
