I don't like to hear about any cruelties against anybody or anything and I am sorry this happened to you. How can the authorities turn a blind eye and allow this to happen? I will never understand how they get away with it. Now I suppose it is foster homes. Not all but some are just as cruel. Good job, Brett. Nancy:)

It's amazing what treatment of children was allowed back then. I am not against spanking, but I am against being beaten and calling it a spanking. You did a good job describing this situation and I can't wait to read about the outcome.

I like the overall writing in the piece. I do feel that there are some places where the writing could be tightened by removing some of the extra adjectives. The first paragraph also was a little confusing. It feels like the digging in of heels should not be before the failure to move the character forward rather than the result of the henchmen's failure. The dialogue reminds me of old adventure books like the Mack Bolan series. This is not a negative; I loved those books. Thank you for sharing this excerpt.

This sounds like a terrible place although no one but the kids housed there would likely see it from that prospective. Since he is receiving all these awards, the outside world must have considered King Tubbo, as you call him, doing a service the kids who lived there. I hope this stay doesn't end up being too long.

You scared me with the mention of Bertha. I can only imagine the damage that assault weapon (paddle) could do on a child's body. Bet none got medical attention. This was another intense installment. You're doing a great job of showing and not telling of this adolescent hell you lived through. Gretchen
