I agree with all you say and then some. I think the art of conversation has taken an awful turn and I long for the days when you actually had to be in the presence of someone. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the excellent review and your comments supporting the piece and the subject matter. Nothing like being there in person. This has surprised me since it is the most popular in this collection so far. estory

very powerful commentary on our social media world. in a world where we all are connected so few of us have real friends anymore.
love the last stanzas
Tagged to all sorts of attention grabbing video clips:
People taking off their clothes,
Setting themselves on fire,
Drinking laundry detergent,
Jumping out buildings
Phishing schemes, email bombs, pop up ads
While all the while,
Somewhere in the background,
A hidden software program
Secretly compiles our profiles
And sells them to telemarketers.

Thanks for the excellent review and your comments supporting the piece. I like to make people think. This style owes much as I said in the notes to the poetry of Jack Anderson; I wonder if you are familiar with his work. He did some great stretching of the bounderies with pieces like Transcendence of the Pencil, The Mysterious Sound, Cafeterias, The Clouds of that Country, Meditation on Christian Science Reading Rooms and The Party Train. estory

This is a well written free verse which shows how anti-social our lives are getting. Kids hardly ever go out anymore. Just talk or meet online. Now even work is online. There are so many negative and scary things on line that show Big Brother is watching.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

Thanks for the excellent review and the words of support for the piece and it's theme. I am all for the real world, face to face relationships. I walk in a lot of nature parks and every time you see these people walking around in a beautiful place with their cell phones, hardly looking at anything else. estory

You're welcome, estory. I like taking walks too. I use my cell only to listen to music. But I still like watching for deer and for the scurrying squirrels and chipmunks.

I enjoyed reading your thoughts here and was surprised at how much I agree with them. I'm old enough to remember the rocking chairs on front porches and how people visited at night with quiet conversations and laughter.

Thanks for the excellent review and your words of support for my piece. The world we knew is slipping away. Fast. estory

Would love to give a 6 here but have none left. When I review a piece of someone's work I cannot separate the creative process from the meter or melody or even from a perfectly followed rule for a particular piece. Give me a poem, story, or thought that will bring tears or laughter a smile, or cause me to pause and think any day of the week. Your poem had me nodding my head with every line. Completely enjoyable to read. Thank you.

Thanks so much for the flattering complimentary comments and the excellent review and support for the piece. I like to make people think and I am glad this poem seems to have done that. Structurally, this poem owes much as I said in the notes to the contemporary poetry and prose poetry of Jack Anderson. If you are not familiar with his work, which is often humorous, I suggest The Clouds of That Country or City Joys, The Invention of New Jersey. estory

If what you say/write is true, and I agree wholeheartedly with you, do you see an option to stopping the madness to which I respond so ferociously at times that only adds to the din. My bad.

Thanks for the excellent review and your comments supporting the poem. Do I see any hope? Only in Christ. Mankind's flaws lead to flawed inventions and structures that will only end in tragedy. Social Media is in many ways the voice of the anti christ. A lifeless, yet living being. estory
Comment from Wendy G
Yes, it can be dehumanising, and one has to be careful to select which social media to use, and how frequently. For family and friends living a great distance apart, such technology as Zoom has been a wonderful asset, private and by invitation only - better than nothing, but of course nowhere near as good as face to face. Well written, and very thoughtful. Thought-provoking too.

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the piece. I can see how people find social media a good forum for keeping in touch with scattered friends and family, I am in that situation myself; but generally I find Facebook posts to be mostly unimportant grandizement. It's really a popularity contest run amok. Nothing replaces face to face contact and physical presence. estory

It does freak me out when you are talking about something and within minutes the pop-ups for precisely what you had mentioned come up. The term big brother is watching comes to mind. You have hit on a very thought provoking topic. Well done. Gretchen

Thanks for the excellent review and your interesting perspective on the poem. I am glad it has proved to be so thought provoking. I like to make people think about themselves and their relationship to the world around them. You might find stories like Nomads interesting in my port. estory

Such a true representation on today's world where so many people are so fixated on social media that it is true isn't it?
How many conversations do you hear where someone is somehow or someway talking about something they saw / heard on social media either for the good or the bad.

A most interesting read here - a poem that delineates the realities i.e the good, the bad and the ugly of this system we call social media - it does appear to have take over our lives, most especially young lives- I've read and reread these informative sentiments
