Goodness, the nurse that cared for the fellow in the hospital was from a wealthy family and was left with nothing after her husband died. Then their children were indentured servants. Sad.

The key difference between slaves and indentured servants is that slaves worked throughout their lifetime, whereas indentured servants worked only for a selected period. Slavery is a status that slaves gained for their life. They had to remain as slaves during their whole lives, and their offspring also become slaves. But indentured servants worked for a few years according to a business arrangement. After that period, they gained their freedom and were allowed to enjoy life as they desired.

Indeed. Your point is something often overlooked in the settlement of the New World colonies. It was practiced primarily by those of the original commercial establishments and wealthy merchants or individuals that offered employment in the colonies. Their bonded contracts did indeed specify their terms of indenture as usually ending when their transport costs were repaid in service. The three sisters were parceled out to separate families and the estate was apportioned to provide care for the minor children while they lived with the families. However, they were never part of the families. Their status was essentially as mendicants though the families had been well compensated for their care. The two younger girls escaped into marriage as soon as legal. The oldest sister managed to finish high school and a full scholarship to Colorado Women's College. All of the girls married badly, surely a result of trauma from their parent's deaths and mistreatment in their foster care. Thank you for taking the time to visit and your interest beyond the posting. Your stellar affirmation was gracious and appreciated. Live long and write well, Fantasist.

It is part of the autobiography I promised our son, quite shaken by a friend's father he was well acquainted with.

What a very moving story about your grandparents! Only six years of married life together, and the three little girls losing both parents so young. You wrote it well, and maintained the interest throughout.

Lady Wendy G: Thank you for your attention and interest beyond the posting. Your affirmation is noted and appreciated. FYI--Their children are listed on the reverse side of the monument. Baby Boy (02/12/10-02/04/10) Eva Christina (02/16/12-02/18/11), Elizabeth Nellie (10/14/13-10/30/84), Ruth Lena (07/29/15-01/14/99). They were six, five, and three at their mother's death. Reviewing the Hot Springs County land records showed their parents' estate was liquidated. The proceeds were then parceled among members of their church's congregation for administrative costs and the projected future needs of the fostered children. These individuals profited from what would have been the children's inheritance. Live long and write well, Fantasist

Wow. What strong and courageous people your grandparents were! Thank you for sharing their story. If they died so young in 1915 and 1918, that means that their daughters were so young when orphaned. I hope you will share more of your mother's story. Best wishes in the contest!

That's awful that the funds were not used properly to care for the children. Your ancestors were heroic!

It is interesting to learn fact about those of your family who when on before you. Some times all we actually know is what is written on the tombstone. You are fortunate to know more. The story is a sad that they had so few years together. It is good that under the circumstances your mother was able to get a degree and become a teacher.

Lady barbara.wilkey: Thank you for your affirmation and perceiving that history is really individuals doing their best.
Another note to consider; you might remember Buctar, his pen name for Bill Terry, a retired USN rear admiral who graced the site a few years ago. He was a careful reader and willing to proof the entries with good advice. He also quoted chapter and verse from textbooks to provide a provenance for his comments. He was acclaimed as a top reviewer too, in the FS standings. His fantasy books posted here were a gift to his grandchildren, each as the named protagonist of the several books he wrote and published. He successfully marketed them to several school districts including a couple in Texas. Those who remember him and appreciated his help will be saddened that he passed away last July at 82. He is interred at the Miramar National Cemetery near San Diego. We met several times in visits to the USS Midway Museum in San Diego. We compared and contrasted my enlisted impressions of the navy and duty assignments with his as a commissioned naval officer and pilot.

This story, A Summer Celebrant, captures one of the great stories of the emerging society out West and the survival of memories through hard times.

This was a captivating piece of work. Your style of writing is strong, momentous and inspiring in its imagery I was compelled constantly to read on. Such a delicate tale whilst sad, always uplifting by the way you absorbed me as a reader. How tragedy binds us all. Beautiful and thank you for sharing. SJ

You are most gracious. Our daughter and I dedicated a new monument for them at the Pioneer Cemetery, Old Round Top, near Thermopolis Wyoming. We were fortunate enough to have a local Protestant Minister pleased to bless and dedicate the headstone last year.
