Cool! I love poems that rhyme and backyard birds. I would love to have quail. I have a bunch of doves, and they are soooo stupid. When they get scared, they fly into my plate glass windows. It has happened at least 8 or 9 times.

    Wow. If you think Doves are stupid, you should have a flock of turkeys around and you would find they outdo the Doves in stupid. Thanks for reviewing and wish you could have the experience of having a flock of quail. They really are fun to watch.

Mystery Writer,

I like your poem describing the behavior of a flock of quail. I particularly like the part about the alpha male guarding his charges. We often have flocks of turkeys in our backyard field and there is always one tom standing guard.

    Thanks so much for your kind review. Quail are my favorites but we also have turkeys and they are the birds that make me smile. In fact, I really get a good laugh out of some of their activities. They are not the brightest birds around and have trouble getting back together when they have scattered.

    Thank you for reviewing and the six stars are awesome. I love the quail and especially when they have hatched a brood. Those chicks are so tiny but seem to be so independent from the time that they peck their way out of the shell.

What a wonderful poem -- I can easily visualize the scene as that Alpha male guards and protects the flock. Nicely done! The rhyme and meter are excellent, and the photo is perfect for this poem. Good luck in the contest!

    Thank you so much for reviewing. I apologize for the delay in my reply but we lost internet in our area. I have so many creatures that come through my yard and I love it. The quail are my favorite though.

Neat! You are lucky to have those little visitors, they are such fun to watch. You must live in the country, or in a secluded area, quail are shy birds and do not usually frequent occupied backyards.
Two years ago we had an influx of abandoned cats here that resulted in a generation of feral cats. They wiped out the quail, preying on the birds and their chicks until the Fish and game came in. They trapped a lot of the cats and adopted them out. The quail are on the recovery now.
Good work,
irish

The quail are my favorite though. We also had a lot of wild domestic cats but they have disappeared. I think the coyotes got them.

Beautiful job on this! Nice rhymes, lovely presentation, and it tells a kind of story about these fascinating birds.

It's a great photo, and personally I would love to be observing a family of quail, close up. They're probably very entertaining for your children. Bobbleheads! That's very funny.

I only have one small suggestion:

When he knows coast is clear
=>
When he knows the coast is clear [to me, it sounds better both grammatically and in terms of the meter]

The only times I read much about quail are in the Bible, or on a menu! I think they are a rather heavily hunted species of bird. I've never been hunting, and I wouldn't want to, unless perhaps I had nothing else to eat. They're really rather cute.
