My dad used to recite this poem to me as a boy, and I always loved the tale. But it's true my friend, though Sam met his end, his intentions were covered in gold. There are strange things done under that midnight sun, where the men still moil for gold, but since he left Plum Tree, back in Tennessee, his story has never grown old. As for me, I must say, reading your poem today, fully explains Sam's most fateful beginning!

Thanks, Dano. My dad used to read poems to me quite often when I was growing up.

Wonderful poem. You are so good at making rhymes that are not forced. And the rhythm is very musical.

His words were profound and profane. [I like the words 'profound and profane.]

Thanks, amahra. I kept wondering how Sam McGee got to Alaska, so I finally made up this tale to explain. I may take a look at dangerous Dan McGrew.

Well, well, well. I must confess, I am more than a little surprised that you seem to keep thinking you know my personality by reading what I write when you are OBVIOUSLY a writer too... (Lol) But in fact, I rarely wrote nonfiction back then, so perhaps I have misled you. (*grin*)

I enjoyed this very much. I would slap one of my rare sixes on it except that I am so late reviewing it, a six wouldn't promote it a lot. I'll save it for later in the week.

Hello Paul,
This is another marvelous, fun poem of the creation of Sam McGee.
Little did Sam know what he was in for, nor did most of the gold miners
who went north. The only ones that got rich were the men selling equipment
and supplies to the searchers. But Robert Service immortalized the poor souls overcome by gold lust.
Excellent rhyming and meter, and good title too
Well done.
Best wishes.
Robert

Sorry for no six for this, Paul. I just happened upon this on a Friday. I so enjoyed your story in a poem and catching up with Sam McGee. This was lots of fun and rhyming form. Perfect meter and rhyme too.

Sending along my very best to you as always and my very best for the share a story in a poem contest.

Sally :))

Hi Paul, here goes my last six for this delightful tale within a poem. So old Sam McGee finally gave up, bless the man. It's a wonderful entry and I wish you the best of luck. Ulla:)))

Thanks, Ulla. Sam should have stayed with his guitar picking.

Thanks for your donation. It is quite inventive. I know not Robert Service but will google to see if they do. Well done. ............................................................

Technically, this poem was fine and it certainly had a story nestling within its rhymes. However, as non-American, novice poet I was a bit perplexed by the refereces to the man himself and to Robert Service. Some help in the notes would have been appreciated, to lighten my day of tunneling through google, and references therein. Kate xx

This is an excellent, well-plotted narrative poem that held my attention till the sad ending. Poor man left a life of grief and boredom for a life that eventually killed him! (old expression fits--from the frying pan into the fire)

This is a beautifully written poem it has a great flow and rhyme scheme. A Lovely photo choice to compliment your words as well. We'll put together.
The northern lights
On those cold clear nights
Were an eerie sight to see.
And under his hood
It didn't look good
For the likes of Sam McGee. Nicely written poem.
