This story described a harsh circumstance, but you made it sound charming. I am glad you loved your life. Thank you so much for sharing, and best wishes to you.

Thank you so much. Life, and it's challenges, are best conquered by conquering your own ability go change your perceptions. If you think it's hopeless, it generally is. If you can hold on to hope, you will generally pull through better than if you hadn't. Or, something like that. Thanks for your sweet review!

This is an excellent story for the flash contest of a hundred words.
Sometimes we learn the real meaning of life and joy as well
when we must start over and in a more basic way.
Money often obscures the best things.
Well done. Good luck in the contest.
I'm listening to the rain as I write, albeit not on a metal roof.

Thank you for your kind review . You are so right and this experience absolutely changed the direction of our lives. I assure you I wasn't grateful when it all happened, but I've been grateful ever since. Thanks again!

I love your amazing story! It's a very well-written story of survival with a very meaningful message. I won't ask how you went to the bathroom, because maybe I don't want to know? You two were really roughing it! Yes, maybe it was indeed in your genetic/epigenetic memory. Awesome!
I enjoyed your Author Notes, as well.

You are so kind! Thank you so much for your review.
We used 2 liter bottles and milk jugs for water, and filled them wherever and whenever we could. Our bathroom was a combination of modern chemicals and redneck ingenuity. At times, I hand washed clothing. I do not miss those 3 things in the least.
I started my collection of oil lamps then. The game-changers were the stove, power inverter, gravity-fed shower, and oil lamps. We were quite comfortable, really.
The funniest thing was we had an electric self-inflating blow up mattress.... so we slept on boards the first few days. I do not recommend that.
    Thanks again :)
