Hmm. An indelible memory of parenting that would be shared by my husband, who managed to change just one diaper, once, for one of our three children. Your story is humorous and well written, but you do know that one improves with practice? Maybe with the grandchildren, lol!

Being an administrator, I learned when others do something better than me to let them do it. Though I did it a few more times. Thanks for the read and the review, kudos to your husband.

Laura sounds like a hand full lol....no, just a normal baby, they don't come with instructions.

Excellent entry for the Parenthood: An indelible memory writing prompt Contest. You grasped the form well. Nice presentation... good picture and easy to read font. Your descriptive words flow well expressing clear mental imagery.

Good luck in the contest.

So, you decided then and there not to be a full-time caretaker, especially for infants. No blame here. I wouldn't want the post either. Good luck. Thanks for keeping the description short.

Yes, glad to let my wife handle the situation. I never want to do anything that I don't do well. Thanks for the read and the feedback.

This was an interesting and fun story about a moment in parenthood. I can relate - I have had similar experiences with my nieces and nephew. You told the tale well, and I like the bit about the slyly smiling teddy bear. Thanks for sharing, and best wishes to you.

That's a precious memory. (Not sure about the leaving the diaper in the toilet for your wife to see. Lol. ) Those diaper pins were awful. I am so glad they came up with velcro diaper covers.
My favorite part was the bottle thrown like a missile.

Thank you for the read and comments. My wife found one of those diaper pins stuck at the bottom of an old purse. It stirred up some good memories about our kids when they and we were young.

Indeed, a cute story. I remember my older sister using cloth diapers and me babysitting. Yuck! The font size is great. The story's plot didn't seem rushed. The visual fits perfectly. You have a good entry. Good luck in the contest.

It's tough for new father's to deal with messy things. I enjoyed reading about your first first experience and all the hazards. You were lucky that it was just pee. Or was there more? I think you could amp up the trip to the bathroom a little more. I also think you could enhance the struggle with getting her re-pinned into a clean diaper. (As you did with the bottle.) The teddy bear smile is a good ending. Notes follow.

Title ==> Diapering

A half-hour later, shrieks emanating from her room. -- not a sentence -- either "began emanating" or "emanated"

As I walked toward her crib, a bottle came flying in my direction. I dodged the missile and watched it smash into the wall. It fell to the floor like a duck taken down by a hunter's shotgun blast. -- spectacular!

Carefully picked it up and ran to the toilet and dropped it in for later. -- incomplete sentence; needs a subject a -- suggest: I picked it up carefully, ran to the toilet, and dropped it in for later. (Might want to mention that you left it for your wife.)

Then washed my baby girl clean, powdered her, and wrapped her in a clean diaper. -- Same as above. Needs a subject. (I)

My father tells a similar story about me on what should've been an uneventful father and daughter to to a retail store. We were buying my mother a gift and while in line to pay, he detected the first sign that something was amiss. By the time he got me to the car, the gig was up, and somehow we both survived, but I bet it was touch and go. Well done on telling the tale. It was a delightful read. So, who won the game?

Thank you for taking the time to read and review. Much appreciated. To tell you the truth, I don't remember who won. All I remember is that Northwestern was playing.

What memories your post brought back, right down to the pricking of a finger and those monstrous pins with the little pink bunnies and blue bears on the closing end of it. New parents today would be totally lost if they couldn't buy disposable diapers.

"What was a poor girl to do when she could talk?" [I believe you mean "COULDN'T talk".]

It was a time when only cloth diapers were available. [Good! there is someone out there who remembers cloth diapers that start out white and turn gray over time, that you clean in the toilet and at least once flush the diaper down the toilet and have to call the plumber.]

Good luck with the contest!

Jay

Thanks for the read, review and the catch. I have edited. Luckily, I never flushed one down the toilet.

Been there, done that. I have six kids so I feel your pain. Great story with a great flow.

If I may suggest that you need to break up the two giant paragraphs into smaller ones. It keeps the readers engaged and the paragraph breaks actually give the mind a tiny respite to take in all of the meaning.

Other than that, this is pretty great stuff. Keep up the nice work!
