Even I've heard of Babe Ruth. One point for me. I much appreciated your note for us ignoramuses (very useful). Three points for you. Loved the writing. A world series with only two nations, one of which is very minor - great attitude! I also liked the shift to the personal, and the fact that at your own level, you were the slugger of the league - and thus by extrapolation, World Record Holder - congratulations!! Kate xx
I had a question as I read. How old was Babe Ruth when he died - shock! Google told me only 53. Horrible.

Awesome. My fondest memory is 1968 the Detroit Tigers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series. I lived in Detroit at the time. I hung around the job for a solid hour after work just to hear the outcome of the final game before heading home. I got off work at 4:30 pm, I did not get home until about 9:30 pm. Just about any bar you went into you could get a free beer on the house. It was a great year. Al Kaline, Mickey Lolich, Willie Horton, Denny McClain who won 30 games as a pitcher that year. It was an awesome year.

Thanks for reminding me, I could not think of his name. Imagine that, now who could forget a name like that? Denny McClain could have gone down in history as one of the greats, but once a flake, pretty much always a flake. What a waste of talent.

My manager in Middle League (established in Bakersfield, CA a year before I became eligible to play, at 13) was Jim Cobb. He was Ty Cobb's son and a heck of a good manager. He taught me there was no substitute for hustle. Of the ones you mentioned, Roger Maris was my hero. The steroid generation tainted the homerun so much that I'm afraid it's irrecoverable.

You know, as I wrote that about Ty Cobb, I was wondering if I could have been sold a bill of goods back then. I was young and impressionable. So I looked up Ty Cobb in Wikipedia. I was disappointed as I looked at his family and didn't find a son, Jim. So, I did a search for "Jim Cobb and Ty Cobb" and Wikipedia had a picture of Jim Cobb and his wife looking through Ty Cobb memorabilia. Definitely my manager, Jim. And the resemblance is remarkable, so now I am reiterating to you with more confidence what I said in my review.

I am innocent when it comes to base ball But I know that it is in the blood of every American .So the first part was really educational for me. But the fall of your hero is really sad. From an idol to a drunk! I loved the poem too,especially the last stanza.

This is a really good article about baseball. I shared your admiration for Maris and Mantle. I collected their baseball cards and lost them all when my parent's house flooded. I was the pitcher for my upper grade country school team until a line drive caught me right between my eyes.

I gave you a six because of this paragraph:
I know the cynics are asking, "How can twenty-nine teams in the US and one in Canada make a World Series?" The answer is we have been doing this for a hundred years. Please don't bother us with details. We are not going to change--so there.
Perfectly explained to the other hundred and some odd countries in the world, besides, most of those countries have players on our teams.
Once again, you hit another homerun with this piece of work. (Yes, I did go there)
