I love the message of this. I agree with you in so many ways. It's refreshing to see someone on here with similar social/political views. Change can only happen if we try!

That may be the great question of our time. It's a question that has persisted through the ages but had become more pronounced, I feel, in the past decade. And I think your question may be phrased too gently, too sanitized. What we really mean is, have we become too selfish, too self absorbed to care about those who are neither family nor friend?

Hello Charles, thank you for your great review and for sharing your thoughts, especially "have we become too selfish, too self absorbed to care about those who are neither family nor friend?" Bingo. Some people are so selfish that they do not even care about their family or friends. They care and worry about #1. Once again, thank you for your review. I truly appreciate the time spent. Xo. My friend this is a great post you have penned. Life is not always fair, but things happen to the just and the unjust as it says in the Bible. This is a great post you have penned using great descriptive, heartfelt words. We need to care more about others. Thank you for sharing. love and blessings, teri

Brilliant and alliterative coinage--sanitized society. Heartfelt and touching reflections as to our avoidance of the ugly reality of the poor and damaged people in our midst. Fine work, Margaret!

This is an emotional post that challenges our sense of civic duty. I am not sure if this is a contemporary phenomenon. Jesus once told the story of the good Samaritan and that really is a similiar admonishment in a world of two thousand years ago. Most people tend to look after themselves. I think compassion is really thing that separates God from other creations. It is the natural world that is dominated by survival of the fittest, the spiritual world that brings compassion into the equation. estory

As a retired teacher who taught first grade in a poverty area, my heart went out to these children, I bought winter coats, shoes, socks, clothes, took young girls to get their hair done. I made sure the ate when they came to school late. We had 100% free breakfast and lunch at our school. It wasn't enough. I don't understand why the rich people in the US, don't donate 10% of their money to help these people. If they did, it would help the and the rich people would still have more money than they could spend.

Hello Barbara, thank you for your thoughtful review and for sharing your thoughts which mean a lot to me, especially "I don't understand why the rich people in the US, don't donate 10% of their money to help these people." Barbara, this is so much anger toward the parents of the children. They feel the parents are lazy and milking the systems. What gets lost in the shuffle is "the children are helpless." They depend upon adults for everything. We could go on about this forever, but God will bless you for the goodness and kindness that you showed the needy children over the years. Once again, thank you for your great review. LateBloomer

What a great subject you've written about. I think you covered it nicely. I'm just old enough to know what caused some of this massive homelessness. Liberals are wonderful, caring people, but sometimes we, as caring people, miss the boat on humanity.

Once, there were little to no people living on the streets... maybe an occasional hobo (they were once called) or the town drunk. People who were mentally challenged lived in institutions and a caring society at that time thought keeping people locked up was cruel, so hundreds of institutions went out of business.

The problem started when these people were treated as out-patients... receiving medication, as well as medical and psychological treatments. But when the patients didn't keep their appointments, their behavior wouldn't allow them to stay with family members, and shelters were too dangerous, so they ended up out on the streets. With no address, they couldn't get government assistance. So there they were on the streets, talking to themselves, fighting, and arguing with imaginary enemies. And sometimes becoming dangerous to the public.

Thank you for posting and I hope many read this.

Thank you for your thoughtful review and for sharing your thoughts which mean a lot to me. I must be around your age as I can relate to much of what you wrote. Born and raised in the heart of NYC, I witness a homeless person here and there as a young girl, but nothing like what we are seeing today. Just sharing here...there was a woman who lived spent the whole night living on a corner, selling newspapers. She was always clean, polite, etc., but lived on the street. When she died, people found out that she had a room somewhere and a substantial bank account, but she choose to sleep on the street. She would be covered in army blankets and plastic during the winter. People would come and take a newspaper and just leave the money while she slept. That's NYC for you. Once again, thank you for your great review and for sharing your thoughts. I truly appreciate the time spent. LateBloomer

Your story is a good look at the way many have decided to look the other way, hoping the problem will just go away. Your question begs for an action for help and acceptance. It's more important now, since many of the rich choose profit over compassion and help for their fellow humans who do not have large portfolios. This is a good reminder for us to reassess our values and view of our society.

I appreciate this fine write. It is a challenge to all of us, and you are right. I don't know if I would say it's a sanitised society or simply a selfish "me first" attitude which prevails. Lack of compassion, and an attitude of superiority. A hand up, not a hand-out, is key. They need to get a fresh start, but also retain autonomy, and be helped to learn the necessary skills for living a productive life. Well written.
