Great commentary! I was in the US Navy, my high school buddy and best friend enlisted in the Coast Guard. When he visited me while my heavy cruiser was in drydock at Hunter's Point, some of my division members started making fun, calling him a 'Shallow Water Sailor,' but we put an end to that right away. When I visited his ship, I was impressed by how clean and organized the ship and all their gear was. They had an 'awards board' with pictures in the crew's quarters. I was amazed.

I commend you for bringing to our attention the importance of the Coast Guard. This you do very well in paragraph two. But some sentences are awkward and need rephrasing. For example: There is a big difference IN OUR ATTITUDES DEPENDING ON WHERE WE LIVE--Montana or . . .
All five branches of the service should be capitalized throughout your essay.

It's always good to remind people of those who serve in less well-remembered areas of public service. It's similar here in the UK - there are many who do critical jobs for the public and never get remembered for it. I enjoyed your well-written article.

Thank you you for the kind words. My wife and I are were living in Ireland a few years ago along the west coast and were fortunate to watch the Irish Coast Guard conducting various training exercises.
