My eldest son served in the military. For 30 years. We treat our heroes disgracefully. They should get a pension, immediate approval for a mid- range house, no deposit. A new car or truck economy price, and a government job with a living wage.If they don't need the pension yet.My view. Karen

At the very least there should be no homeless vets. This one was published.

I always admire poets who can write an acrostic. I only knew the one where you had to come up with one word beginning with the letter you needed. But to write something as poignant as this is excellent.

Hi Douglas. I can certainly understand that a man can be broken when fighting in a war. Why can man not learn and stop the greed and cruelty. But it appears that will never be the case. We all live it right now. Such a waste of innocent lives and so much damage to others because of one madman's desires.
Your acrostic is very well written. Good luck. Ulla:)))

Because people like Hitler and Putin exist. Their actions force good men to do terrible things :(

I'm impressed by your way of describing your lucid memory of the war. Your using of rhyming is very natural. I even saw internal rhyming of Thought and Lost.

Well done and good luck in the contest.

Yhis is a very powerful Acrostic, Douglas about the ongoing war many veterans suffer behind doors. I know my dad's horrors of w.w.2 stayed with him always. Thank you,

I hope my brother comes to a peace with his issues. ?Always? is a scary word in relation to PTSD. Thank you.

I do not believe that we were created as an extension of our creator's love to be at war with each other at any time. A uniting theme that flows from Genesis to Revelation is love. It was god's love that caused our creation. It was the love that Jesus had for us that allowed him to sacrifice his life on our behalf. The two greatest commandments given to man are both about love, love for God and love for our fellow man. This does not reconcile with war. I believe that war not only damages the defeated, it does I believe, equal damage to the victors.

Douglas, you have penned
this sad poem with so much
compassion. War is a wanton
thunderous tragedy. I have
relatives who served in Iraq
and Afghanistan. I have every
respect for our military. I am
grieved that it took so long
for the U.S. government to
acknowledge and start
taking care of our war vets
who suffer from Agent Orange and later on, the
burn pits. My best wishes
for the contest with this
very worthy write. Blessings
