That's really scary, watching the flames approach and knowing there's nothing you can do but run to safety. You've described it well, Bob. "The wind blew west, the houses safe by happenchance." Has a lovely sound to it. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. We've seen smoke from distant fires but this was the first time we could see the fires so close

I didn't know you were from Portugal. You must have shared similar fearful, and probably sleepless nights as Fanstory's Ulla, from Spain. Also, I didn't know you wrote poetry ... as evidenced by this piece that so brilliantly contrasted the bright lights of the Fiesta summer nights with the cruel moving flames of a summer fire. Great job!
In Portugal each summer night is festa night. [Unless it's a unique Portugeuse spelling, you need an "i" in Fiesta.]

Thank you. Yes, in Portuguese it's festa. I'll make a note in the post. I moved to Portugal 4 years ago.
