Let's see, 1956 would have put me in high school as a junior. I remember him well. My mother was about the opposite of yours. She liked Elvis. As a matter of fact, when Confidential Magazine ran an article about Elvis signing his autograph on a teen's breast, my mother said, "I vow, if that's the least that young man does to all those girls throwing themselves at him, then he's a pretty decent kid." Of course, your mom's version was more representative of society. You did a good job documenting your post while making it warm and personal. I hope you do well in the contest.

Thank you. Your mother was a bit younger than mine when Elvis appeared. I was 10 in 1956, but Mom didn't have me until she was 39. I was kid number 10 of 12. Thanks for the interesting comments. Hugs.

This was a well-written story. I love how you incorporated your mom to show that Elvis wasn't popular with everyone. I happen not to have been a big Elvis fan, either. I enjoyed the read. Best, JohnC.

My mother just said, " he can't sing". I've never cared for his music but he was a new direction for music. All genres that challenge the old regime are met with resistance and protest. Your piece was enlightening with the facts and personal with the tale of your mother. Lol I love that she got the last word.

Thank you. Mother's reaction was so out of character for her and is probably why I remember it so vividly. Hugs.

Well, your mom did have a point, but then so have mothers throughout the ages. Elvis did usher in a lot of changes in music, public entertainment, what we considered morally accepted and so much more. Some good, some not so.
Well told.

Thank you. The older generations often resist change. Look at all the changes and protests in our time. Hugs.

I felt so sorry for him, he didn't have the best manager in the world, from what I've heard. I loved Elvis's music, and Shep, always made me cry. I can understand your mother's feelings about his him shaking, lol, it was rather provocative. But he still remains one of the greatest icons of our times, and we still love his music. I enjoyed reading this about your mother, it made a refreshing change to have someone stand up for her principles. Well done and good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

Thank you. I think it was more Elvis's move than anything. Hugs.

This piece is a very interest into history, Elvis, and your mom's opinion, of course. It is easy to read and informative. The author's notes provide interesting background information. Good luck in the contest! Evi

This is a good factual description of how Elvis was perceived by many people who were full-blown adults in the 1950s, trying to bring up their families as only they knew best. He was a threat and a danger to all the values they believed in.

Thank you. Yes, Elvis was quite a culture shock to the older generation. Hugs

I can't really remember how adults felt about Elvis, but I remember watching his 2nd film "Jailhouse rock" and the kids were dancing in the aisles in the theatre, I think he outworked what was happening in society, it was gaining momentum, he was simply part of the changing, born for that season. Beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

This was a wonderful story, he introduced sex into American homes via television. An influencer, just like social media today, in a way she was right. He did change the world. Yet the rigid standard were controlling in a different odd way.

Thank you. Elvis was a bit o;f a shock to the older generation. I was 10 when he started singing and still remember my mother's reaction. Hugs

You've presented a story that captures the feelings of a generation who was used to big band music who could not understand, (nor did they want to), this new wave of entertainment.
They did have strong opinions and weren't shy about sharing them, lol.

Thank you. You're right, they didn't want to accept the new ways the same as our generation didn't want to accept things like gay marriage. Every generation has some issue they disagree with. Hugs
