Thank you for setting that out so succinctly.
I wonder how you would apply this to the film 'Glass' (follow-up to Unbreakable). There are a lot of blurred lines in that one.

Nothing in life or in a story is truly cut and dried any particular way, which sounds like exactly what you are saying. It's kind of like what Shakespeare came up with for Hamlet to say in "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." Thankfully, the protagonist isn't always the good guy or it would make for a dull world. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Good timing. I was just thinking of writing a play again. This deserves a second and third reading to get clear the difference between antagonist and villain. I would say now that in Les Miserables that Jarrod is the antagonist but not a villain. Is that correct?

As usual, I always take away something from your essays on writing. Your examples always clarify your points. Thanks or another illuminating essay. In my own work, I usually find the antagonist is a force, fate, or the government (as in my novel about WWII). I've never tried to actually write a villainous character. I found your explanations of the differences interesting.

Amazing! This was so intense yet you were able to provide a teaching moment and a rather education moment as well, G. I definitely learned a lot about the difference and the need of one or the other. You definitely made this very clear. Very well done, greatly enjoyed.

This is another excellent write in your "how to be a better writer" series of writing guides. I know that is not a formal name, but it would be good if you put them all in a book or some format that made them easily accessible.

I admit I was amused that a wonderful writer like you chose three movies to illustrate your point, not books. Excellent work. Terry.

Great chapter to your series. Thank you.
(And, of course, error free)
Just a side note - Filming 'The Fugitive', they made a number of possible endings for test audiences. My favorite was the plot line exposing Gerard as the rapist/murderer. He wouldn't feel free until Kimble was silenced - a twist that sheds a different light on the entire series.
Best wishes.

You know I'm a fan of your writing "how-to" series. This was particularly good when you differentiated between the villain and the antagonist. The only example that I remembered is "The Fugative", but it was clearly representative of the antagonist/protagonist conflict. This was a good job, G.

This is great. It's concise, well-written and informative.
If I may, I'd like to share it with my online writing group. We are a FB group called Cre8ivePen. I've been on vacation for the summer and need to begin posting again... right away. lol I'd love for this to be the first post in a while. Let me know if it's okay.
Many thanks and blessings,
Deb
