Hi Rod,
I counted 47 words. But I counted hyphenated words as "1".
"brothers-in-arms"
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought that hyphenated words are counted as one word.
The Marine motto came through loud and clear...
"Marines are America's expeditionary force in readiness, not just in battle, but every day. We never leave a Marine behind. If you see a fellow Marine who needs help, step up and step in." ...I like that!
I also like your explanation of "Jarhead".
Isn't it something what they can do today with prosthetics? A marathon race has to be very difficult wearing an artificial limb like that.
It's no wonder that you won the contest with this entry. Congrats!

    I am thrilled and honored that you found this story posted awhile ago. Many thanks, Kimbob, for your praise. Every word processor is different when it comes to counting words. I use Apple Pages, which apparently counts hyphenates as separate words. Rod

Excellent entry for the 50 Word Flash Fiction writing prompt contest. Your story made me tear up. It's a great way to honor our marines. I remember the movie, jarhead. Do you know where the name came from?

Good words count and story line. A great presentation and imagery. It flows well with descriptive words that paint a clear mental picture.

I wondered about your word choice - hapless, not sure if I would ever want to be called that. But I looked it up, and it suits.
Don't you just grin hearing other branches talk about their version of boot camp?

Semper fidelis reigns true today and has since the beginning of the red stripe brigade, the stripe that runs down their pant legs on blues. You may want to check out its history. Very well done.

    Absolutely. In years, now past, I joined a group of Marine aviators to golf and wrote a poem about The Marines which included a history of that stripe.
