Yikes. That was a bit of a nightmare! I would have been terrified Lincoln would elect that weekend to go over the rainbow bridge. Not sure how old you were when this happened--but there'd be no sufficient age to deal with the loss of another's pet! Somehow it pleases me he had two more weeks with his very own "family"...

It must have been about twelve years ago. I would not have coped if he had died then - he was like a child to them, and was their whole world. Ian got him as a pup after his first wife died, when he was quite emotionally needy. Thanks so much for your super review.

Lincoln burrowed his way into my heart very quickly!

How kind of you to care for Lincoln and help that couple. They needed to get away and they knew you would be so capable in caring for their aged and beloved dog. Best wishes in the contest!

Thanks so much Helen. At that stage I didn't have much experience with dogs, so I was just glad he didn't die!

It was great that you could spend some quality time with Lincoln. And thank goodness he did not die when he was with you. The dog in the picture is cute.
I am glad someone helped you with him. Have a great day and weekend.
May Lincoln rest in peace.

Good story, Wendy. Sunny didn't get involved? Maybe he could have helped you. Ah, maybe this was before Sunny. Glad you made it through the ordeal.

Yes, many years before Sunny. At that point I didn't have much experience with dogs at all - so I was definitely glad he didn't die on me! Thanks so much for reviewing.

You found yourself taking on more than you bargained for with Lincoln it seems. I remember lugging 30kg sacks of flour around when I had my mil. I wouldn't have wanted another 8kg on top of that.
At least his real owners had him for the last two weeks. Despite what the owners said it would have been awful for you had he died in your care. This was an engaging story. There is a school of thought that one should not start a story in quotes, but I have to say I don't always accept that argument and certainly I did not feel 'thrown' by your opening.

Thanks so much for your super review! I always appreciate your insights. I was SO glad he didn't die on me. At that point I wasn't very experienced with dogs, so I have no idea what I would have done, especially if he had died in the street!

We had an 85-pound yellow Labrador. We raised her from 6 weeks until she died at 17 years. The majority of those years she was a perfect companion for my four boys and myself. She was a true military dog. She moved back and forth to Germany with us and was happy in whatever situation we lived. Sometimes apartment dwelling and sometimes she had a back yard. The last few years were very trying with her, but she'd been such a great dog for so many years that, I couldn't put her down. One of the boys would have to carry her outside to use the bathroom every morning. Once her legs got to working, she could manage to get back in. My heart goes out to Lincoln. Thank you for sharing this writing prompt entry with us.

What a wonderful dog, who lived well to an excellent age! How lovely that you had so many years with her. Thanks so much for reviewing my story, always appreciated.

Wendy,
I love this awesome heartwarming story. Lincoln can be the poster child for why we should adopt senior pets. I know you must've had a difficult time, but you probably made his day! I get the part of panic when you knew you couldn't carry him off the road. But he lead a long life of servitude to his owners, so he was entitled to stop traffic once or twice.
Awesome story, Wendy!
Good luck with this one.
Blessings,
Cindy

Thank you so much Cindy. Yes, when I finally got a dog (after I retired) I got an old Lab (nearly twelve) and we had just over three wonderful years together. Many thanks for your good wishes too.

Wendy,
That?s wonderful! I hope other people do the same. It seems all of God?s creation is mellow and sweet when aged a little. 😊
Good luck.
Have a nice weekend,
Cindy

Excellent. Good story. Good work.
My wife and I are pet sitters. We travel the U.S. staying in people's homes tending their pets (from fish and birds to horses). We can relate!
Best wishes.

Thanks so much Wayne - I appreciate your review. I hope no pet dies while you are looking after them. Otherwise, I think you are really living life in a wonderful way.

"We're expecting it at any time?" WHaaaat? What a last-minute revelation. That must have been horrifying.
Para 2, 4th sentence: SUGGEST removing the comma after event.
Did that little experience sour you on having a dog? I had to go to the internet to calculate Lincoln's weight (America is still so far behind) and it turns out he is about 83 pounds! He must be a big'un. At least he didn't die, not on your watch anyway.
Great story, as usual. Very entertaining.

Thanks so much Gary. Great review. Yes, I knew he was getting on in years, but hadn't realised just how old or near the end he was. I wasn't very experienced with dogs at that time, and yes - he was big!
Let's say I still wanted a dog, but preferably one that knew to eat out of a bowl!

Did he pass?

Two weeks after he went back to his owners.

Oh no, so sad. Sometimes I feel worse when a beloved anima dies than when a human does. I know it sounds silly, but they are so dependent upon us to make sure they are safe and healthy. At least he didn't die in your care.

I am envious how easy it seems for you to nail one six after another.
Losing Buddy so soon ago, I wasn't sure I needed to read where Lincoln joined him in pet heaven. Gladly, he didn't. I especially like the line...
Lincoln sat down ... and started to slide backwards down the driveway. I put my foot behind his bottom as a brake.
t made me laugh.

Thanks so much Tom! I greatly appreciate the six stars, and I did spend quite some time on it, so I am glad it paid off. I was very glad Lincoln didn't die - at that point I wasn't very experienced with dogs.
Thanks so much for your review.
