I enjoyed this fun dog-sitting story so much! My dog has a huge personality, and I couldn't help giggling throughout this story because it reminded me so much of my dog. My daughter had dog sat for a husband and wife for months at a time twice a year for 4 years. This summer, while dog sitting, Rootie did on her. It was really hard on my 27-year-old daughter. The death was horrid. The dog was really old and really sick. So this story also reminded me of that. I am so glad you didn't have to go through what my daughter did. I love your storytelling. You are one of my favorites on this site for sure!

Oh no! How very hard for your daughter! I'm so sorry. I would not have coped, I am sure.
Thank you for your really lovely review, with such encouraging words. I am so glad you love my stories.

Thank you for inviting me to read your story Lincoln with out needing to do a review. I was a teacher & I love doing reviews. This will draw the reader in. We are going to go along with you to this "holiday house nestled into a cliff overlooking a beautiful beach" What fun. When I was trying to get my dog home. I went & got my car. That was how I made my best new friend up here in the Vermont woods. Somara went into her house & came out with treats that Bea (stage name Sweet Puppy) love, got leashed & into my car.

That sounds so sensible. Except I couldn't leave him in the middle of the road while I went back for it, no houses nearby to turn to for help. And my car was small and Lincoln very large; I couldn't lift him and I don't think he would have cooperated and climbed in. He only lasted two more weeks, poor old thing. At that time I was not very experienced with dogs ... It ended well fortunately. Thanks so much for reviewing - I greatly appreciate it.

Hi Wendy,
Hard to refuse the request to mind Lincoln. But finding out he might die any day? And that he had to be hand-fed? The offer of a holiday cottage sounded like fun... on a cliff overlooking the ocean, private beach. But Lincoln needed a lot of care. There would be a lot of dog-sitting!
I enjoyed the part about him laying down in the middle of the road, and refusing to move. What a predicament! And cars were stopping to help you.
He crunched up the neck, bones and all? Was the chicken cooked?
That doesn't sound like much fun, Wendy. I bet you were relieved when the owners returned.
Nicely penned! I'm sorry they disqualified you from the contest. Those pesky judges!
Hugs,

Thanks Kimbob. A super review. Raw chicken, and yes he ate the bones and all, they were soft and digestible. Ugh.

Thanks for this fun story of you "dog friendly" vacation. At least the holiday home was in a beautiful location. I enjoyed reading your adventures with Lincoln. I especially like your description of putting your foot against his bottom as a brake! The essay is well organized and shows your good humor/humour.

Oh my goodness this dog has his owners wrapped around his little paw! Perhaps a kick up the backside may have helped, sorry, but this dog maybe 15 years old but he sounds a little bit lazy to me Wendy, at least you survived the week and were able to hand over a live dog back to his owners at the end of it, a fun post, love Dolly x

Thank you Dolly. I don't think he was lazy - just old and tired, and very close to death. Ian got him when he was a puppy, just after his first wife's death, so he was very emotionally attached. Thanks so much for reviewing. Appreciated.

I truly enjoyed this story. While sadly it is about an old dog's last days, there is humor here when expecting just to dog sit, you were given detailed instructions to care for Lincoln.
Best wishes

This non-fiction work provides quite an insight into how "friends" can take advantage of friends for their own purposes. As you identified, more was revealed about Lincoln, which had you known, might have altered your decision to accept a holiday with him.
Your shock at the fact that he had to be hand fed, might die, and finding out that he couldn't walk very far was genuine. It comes through in the story.

Lol, good post for the prompt. Obviously, Lincoln didn't steal your heart the way Sunny did. Sounds like a stressful and tiring trip. How are the floods doing this days?

No, he didn't steal my heart like Sunny. I was just glad he was still alive at the end. The Flood Recovery Centre is still open, but with reduced hours, so I only do one day a week now.

Wendy, This is a very well written story about your fun with Lincoln. He was not a skinny dog by any means. You used such great and light hearted words that made me smile. I am so glad he didn't die on you. That would have broken my heart if it happened to me. My husband buried one of our cats this morning. She was 12 years old and was so precious. That is what I named her. Our Precious. Thank you for the cute story. It made my heart smile. love and blessings, Teri

Oh I am so sorry. I remember reading a story about Precious. It is heart-breaking when they die. I would have been heart-broken if Lincoln had died - and he was their world, like a child to them, as they had no children. Thanks so much for reviewing.
