Thanks for more of your outstanding advice that can only make writers better. Being one of the worst for hating to edit and polish, I recently figured out that mistakes kill the readers' experience. Thanks for sharing.

An excellent piece with great advice for writing horror stories. I have never chosen to use this genre myself, but a lot of what you said is relevant and applicable to all stories. Interesting, and well set out.

Hi Gareth, your advice is quite generic of all writing. All your points are well worth to be noted and goes for all prose writing. I couldn't agree more that the editing is the most important but also the hardest to do. Thanks a lot for your great input. Ulla:)))

It does apply to all writing but folk tend to think blood and guts is a substitute in horror or just sticking in the old trope. Shouldn't cut it! lol many thanks. G

I've written a few horror stories, but it's not my thing at all. You did a good job at explaining your "how to." I didn't find a thing wrong with it, and of course never do. Shirley

You are very generous to offer such substantive advice to each of us. A free seminar I can save just in case my muse ever comes alive in a horrific way...smile.

Your points are all well taken, and your summation applies to all kinds of prose (with the exception to "scare the sh** out of the reader...)

I think my biggest fear is that my attempts at writing prose WOULD scare the "you know what" out of the reader regardless of editing!

Sigh. Every now and then I dive headfirst into a flash contest. I can say it's always best to write, rewrite, carve the fat, then let it sit for a day or two before giving it another look.

Amazing the things that come to mind!

Thanks again...

Karenina

Good clear concise advice from someone who knows the craft. I think it's a professionally written essay, in a comfortable, personable style, it's like sitting across a desk from you. That makes it very welcoming and it's easy to navigate. estory

- Don't rush the work.
- Remember tone and atmosphere.
- Make it believable where you can.
- Develop the setting and characters.
- Scare the sh** out of the reader.

All of these except the last one should exist in all stories. I know I need to make sure they're present in my romance novels. Thank you for sharing these with us. It's always good to be reminded.

A wonderful picture of the spooky house on a dark, stormy night, G. I really enjoyed the work you covered about about writing regarding horror stories. Now of course, I did bookcase it, anything of interest I do so. Very well done, greatly enjoyed. I found the 'in conclusion' part rather interesting.

Horror seems to be pretty rare among the writers, and even rarer is the poetic writer of horror, but I guess that would be similar, but thank you for this series of tips and technical help with these great tips and abilities, well done, blessings Roy
