What an unusual and beautiful story. The tree could stand in as so many other things, such as gays, people of color, etc. This would be a great story and discussion for a child's classroom.

You had a unique idea and did a wonderful job of putting it in writing. Good luck with this contest.

Wow, thank you Pam! You are so right about the tree representing many things - anyone feeling alone and disconnected, finding someone who reaches out to them. Love your interpretation!!

    Take care,
    Rhonda

Those trees have a connection to humans. Trees of life connect generations of families. Roots and branches extend. Look at the leaves, they resemble veins. They absorb nutrients, oxygen and water. Upside down, the tree looks like a pair of lungs. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Sal! So good to hear from you, too! I?ve tried to peak my head in now and then, but was challenged by Pam to pick a prompt or contest to reconnect.

    Thanks for reviewing,
    Rhonda

I enjoyed your contest entry, Rhonda. I understand the
literal and figurative use of the tree. Your words were
well thought out and made a great point about our
society today with its impersonal way but still filled
with hate.
Best wishes in the contest, Jan.

One thing I think I'll never see...an emotional, talking tree. This story, told by a tree, is brief, but imaginative, as the tree tells how it feels. I like that the tree feels connected to a human that experiences emotions. Best wishes in the contest.

Thank you for the review, LJ!
Yes, emotional trees are rare, but it is also an allegory for a personality type.

That being said, I talk to my plants all the time, just in case. Lol.

    Thanks again,
    Rhonda

I like you personification of the tree. It is fun to imagine that plants may have feeling. I do seem to feel they do. I talk to pot plants some times. I have Peace Lily that goes limp if I forget to water it regularly. I say "oh, I see you are pouting again." It tells me "It's your fault, It's the only way to get a drink around here.

Beth, I truly believe plants, especially trees, have feelings. I, also wrote this as an allegory for a personality type.

Give my best to the pouting Peace Lily!

    Take care,
    Rhonda

I loved your tree story in eighty words. If I had a six, it would be yours. It was vivid and brought about the appropriate emotions. You did a great job. Shirley

Good to see you post again, Rhonda! Hope all is going well with you! The last time you wrote, you told us about your organic gardening.

Enjoyed your story about the thoughts and feelings of this tree. I do believe they are sentient in some way but they communicate so much slower so we miss a lot of what they are trying to say. Certainly, a kind girl's stroking means a lot. Best wishes in the contest!

Comments:

Longing is my greatest need, regret's ugly cousin. (I think "Regret" is the "ugly cousin" of Longing. So I would have thought something like "regret is the ugly cousin." Longing seems positive but regret is negative.)

I desire to connect with another salient being. (I wondered if "sentient" would have worked better than "salient" ?)

Thank you so much for the extremely helpful review! I made the suggested changes, and love the way it sounds.

Still gardening, though drought has fried my poor little plants.

    Have a great weekend,
    Rhonda

What a wonderful perspective you've written in to this one dear Rhonda, I think there is evidence that creation, particularly trees, are almost self aware, they clap their hands after all, and Jesus said rocks would cry out if we didn't, well done, blessings Roy

It?s funny, Roy, but one of the layers beneath this poem is exactly the point you made.

1 Chronicles 16:33: "Let the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord?"

    God Bless,
    Rhonda
