A good and well-written history and summary of Star Trek.
As to being a fan, I am half-hearted. I like the original, TNG, and Enterprise, but I lost interest in the others, with the exception of the newer movies. Sometimes a good thing can be beaten to death.
Best wishes,
Mary

I like the first series from the sixties, and the current one, which brings the story back around to about a decade before TOS timeline.

A 60's Star Trek fan myself, for years I was a faithful follower. Then, admiral James T. Kirk bought a farm just up the road from me. Both of us traveling regularly out of the same airport and frequenting many of the same local functions. Regrettably, just the name Star Trek brings him to mind. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

I understand that William Shatner is a bit full of himself. Now he's gone to space at ninety, so he'll be impossible.

They hated him at the local airport so much that they told him if he couldn't be nicer to curious fans he could fly from somewhere else. LOL. Of course, I'm sure fans pestered the heck out of him.

Hmm, I like to see material on one the great sci-fi franchise ever made. Unfortunately, there are many errors. I listed a few.

note:

In the Star Trek, Chekov came in season 2.

Your TNG is mostly right, but only for the first season.

The first officer and security officer were both female aliens.
-No. DS9 had two security officers at first. A male Lt. from Star Fleet and Odo, the shape shifter (Founder) who soon became Security Chief.

{Indigenous} American male first officer,

- Indigenous is the wrong word, as its meaning could be any people native to any area. (Native American)

{biracial} male science officer (African American / Vulcan),

- this too is incorrect. You are mixing race with species. Tuvok was not Bi-racial

The ship had gone through a worm hole and is stranded on the other side of the galaxy.

- This is also incorrect. It was an artificial Energy Wave sent by the Caretaker

biracial female security officer (Earthling/ Klingon)

- Also incorrect. Torres was of mixed Species yes, but she was Chief Engineer.

"Enterprise" checked out the pre-TOS Federation of Planets. The crew were all human with the exception of a female Vulcan first officer.

- This is wrong too. You're forgetting about the Chief Medical officer. Dr. Phlox

The captain is a black female raised by Vulcans.

- She is now, but not during the first couple of seasons.

-

The Caucasian captain has died in another timeline and knows that he has seven years to live.

- Hmm, not quite. Same timeline (except the season finale) Pike simply used the crystal to see his future.

Well, you certainly ate my lunch on the subject of Star Trek. I, of course, used some cursory information and loose terminology to get through to the general reader. I see I entered some downright wrong data in this humble presentation as well. Guess I'm not a super-fan. I will never bring it up again.

As far as tv shows, I only like the original that I've seen in
reruns of reruns. I had no interest in the sequels. You did
a good job of recapping all the main characters, Bill. Not
many original stars around today.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Thanks for the recap. I think you didn't mention Whorf as replacing the female security officer, Tasha, who thought she had a better acting opportunity elsewhere. Bummer for her. I liked TNG but the character interactions best in DS9. I will have to look into the Discovery...

I could have gone on and on, of course. I thought that the minutia, like the character losses and actor?s reasons, was too big a kettle of fish to fry.
reply by lyenochka on 24-Jul-2022
I agree. But I bet you'll get lots of reviews with lots of minutiae, well, from other trekkers, of course...

I was never a trekkie fan, but this is a well-written account of the changes made over time. The series seems to keep up with the times as characters change gender and ethnic background.

The push now is gender neutrality and elimination of white men unless they are legacy obligations.

I lost interest in Star Trek after the original series. I watched most of the TV series and the movies with the original cast members. Piccard in "The Next Generation" was too precious for me. I haven't seen any of the subsequent series. You do an excellent job of describing them. I never thought about what a diverse crew the first series had. They just needed a few alien crew members. I don't think I'm encouraged to watch any of the later series. judi

I know people who have watched Dr. Who since the sixties and that requires radical fanaticism.

I never watched Dr. Who. I've never been able to get into the new Star Trek series and haven't watched any of the new take-offs you mentioned. judi

I know this these Star Trek must be fascinating to have such a great following and the fanscontinue to be intrigued. It was one of my husbands favorite shows. I have to admit I haven't seen many of the episodes, because when I show is really exciting, I hate having to wait for the next episode. Maybe I'll try binge watching it on Netflix. That way I won't have to wait.

What a nice summary of the evolution of StarTrek. Easy to follow and logically structured. I liked the emphasis you put on the sometimes chaotic gender/racial distribution of roles during the development of the different stark trek series.

I never watched past TNG, but I like your rundown. You do indeed have to be a fan. Don't forget about how Captain Pike (yes, Caucasian American man of course) was considered for the first captain and was in one of the two original pilots! I did like TOS and TNG both, as well as some of the movies. But good heavens, the timeline is as tangled as the Terminator series!

Yes it is. I?ve always hoped they would go to the Christopher Pike timeline.
