That's a funny observation by your neighbor. I do think languages do have a different sound. People always think Russians are fighting because of the hard stressed syllables. But it's just the language!
If you want to use the Spanish question mark before the question, you can if you use the Advanced Editor and the symbol menu. Click on the Omega button on top.
The title and the later references to Mahatma Gandhi has a spelling error:
biography of Ghandi (Gandhi)

Oops! And here I am criticising my poor student.
Regarding what you say about languages, I agree to a certain extent. German spoken by Hitler sounds terrible, but my first German teacher sounded extremely sweet. That's why I like the language.
I think I sound happier in English because I like it better. An elderly acquaintance told me once he understood perfectly. He said English was my baby. A baby I met when I was 6 years old. Half a century more or less!
And apparently I sound very different. If I go for a drink with my students, they are always surprised when they hear me speak Spanish.
Thanks for the Omega info. It's good to know, but the truth is I cannot be bothered with the first question mark, I never use it anymore. I make an effort with the stress marks the few times I write in Spanish though.
Thanks for being so helpful. As usual.

In fact, I think the different Spanish accents vary so much. Cuban Spanish sounds very harsh but Peruvian and Chilean Spanish are so much nicer. It's funny that you say you don't bother with those characters. I think since we all started texting, we stop with those accents as much as possible - I think the French do, too.
-
In my case it's because my keyboard is in English and I hate to have to switch.
To be frank, I don't know any Cubans, but there are lots of Latin Americans in Spain and to me they all sound super sweet.
The Spanish we speak in Spain has a flatter intonation, is harsher and I think we're less polite. Thanks to them many people have started saying have a nice day over here. Of course, this is a generalisation.
It's always interesting to talk to you. x

What you said totally makes sense. Latin Americans are really polite. My Chilean teacher was in Spain and ordered food and the seller practically threw the food at him. He was so shocked and thought it was due to racism. But as you shared, it's just a different culture!
-
There is also a bit of racism as well, I'm afraid... Which I hate.
Many years ago, I saw a Latin American man walking down the street with his little daughter.
As they went past, I caught a couple of sentences: the little girl was telling her dad that her friends didn't believe she was Spanish. The Dad told her not to pay any attention because she had been born here and what mattered is that she knew herself.
We aren't perfect and they aren't perfect either, but I love talking to people from other countries. You can learn so much.

This is a fine piece of writing. The last sentence confused me so much I no longer know whether you are English (native speaker) or Spanish. Thanks for entering this contest. Kate xx
Just one SPAG for your consideration:
Materialistic much? Maybe > Too materialistic? Maybe or even just Materialistic? Maybe

Hi Katherine,
I was trying to mimic the 'Jealous much?' expression (I love playing with words when I write), but I've changed it all the same.
I'm a hundred percent Spanish, but English feels like my mother tongue. I've always spoken to my kids in English and they also talk to each other in English even though we live in Spain.
My real name is Maria Jose, but I prefer Maria.
Heather Knight used to be my name in most social networks as Heather is one of my favourite names.
Thanks so much for reading, for your help and for creating the contest.

Hi Shirley,
The older I get, the more things I realise I don't know, but comments like that still surprise me. Some of my students think Shakespeare was a novelist.
Anyway, I've misspelled Gandhi myself, though I've fixed it now.
