Another story about a teacher who changed a life. I had a literature teacher in high school who convinced me that reading books opened doors, even if my peers thought they were uncool. I never told Mrs. Hersch what her words meant to me, but you'll be able to share this essay with Mrs. Fryar. And that's pretty damn cool.

Another story about a teacher who changed a life. I had a literature teacher in high school who convinced me that reading books opened doors, even if my peers thought they were uncool. I never told Mrs. Hersch what her words meant to me, but you'll be able to share this essay with Mrs. Fryar. And that's pretty damn cool.

The accomplishments of her students are remarkable, teachers, a bunch of lawyers, judges, a Peabody Award winner, a Director of a large national museum, and many Ph.D. Professors, business owners, Academy Award winning writer, national newspaper columnist, and on and on. I think people that God brings by us is so important for our development, my father wasn't great at being a dad, but he was still a top bloke, nor were the great sportspeople I knew, until I became part of a family of very clever people who taught me to use the grey matter between my ears. I would say that not only was she a fabulous teacher, you were a very good student with an open and receptive mind to the teaching. Everyone who has learned how to learn, how to think, owe a great deal to those who cared enough to teach us and not give up on those of us who were a little bit slower than some others. I was pretty full of myself when I took my first semester of journalism class. I was already an adult, maybe even older than my teacher, who graduated from college early. I presented my first assignment and she politely ripped it apart. The most telling and embarrassing thing that happened was that I misspelled the word interest. She said without pity, "Until you learn how to spell a word properly, you should abstain from using it." I never forgot that. In today's world with spellcheck, there is no excuse for turning in an assignment with misspelled words. Back then I did not have spellcheck, but being in college and full of my own importance, I was brought appropriately low.
