Two six star posts in one weekend!! That's a winner in and of itself. You did a great job in describing Ms. Fryar's influence on your life. Isn't it interesting how the right person arrives at the right time in some lives. Do you ever wonder how gratifying it must have been to Ms. Fryar to have a student who 'got it'. She probably needed a Terry Broxson in her life at that moment as well. I enjoyed the read and wish you much luck in the contest. ann

Fabulous!
But you have to give the sixth star to Ms. Maridell Fryar.
Very well written. Good work.
Wish I'd found Ms. Fryar. I quit HS at 17 and joined the Marines. I finished HS by correspondence and graduated college with the GI Bill, but man, oh man, could she have saved me some hard knocks!
Best wishes and good luck in the contest.

Wayne, thank you for the six stars!!! And I do know they are for Mrs. Fryar. She is an amazing woman. You know I learned a long time ago that the school of hard knocks is a dang good school. Thank you! Terry.

If all it does is save your life, well, that's somethin'.

Terry, you sure blow your own horn a lot, don't you? I am a retired CEO of a million-dollar company, etcetera etcetera. Then you have the most fantastic teacher who helps you. You can't lose! Oh well, you have to slum around with the rest of us fools now that you are retired.
Any way you slice it, you have it made in the shade!
Best wishes, as if you would need them.
Jesse

Jesse, I am saddened to learn you think the story I wrote was about me "blowing my own horn." The contest was to write about how teaching impacted your life. Without Mrs. Fryar, my life would have been much different.

She has a long list of students that did well. Of the ones I know about: A five-star general, a two-time Peabody award-winning broadcaster, a syndicated newspaper columnist, an Acadamy Award winner writer, a director of one of the country's larger museums, dozens of lawyers, dozens of teachers, several Ph.Ds, several executives of large corporations, a couple of CEOs in companies much larger than the one I help develop (Please note every mention of that company was with partners, not ME by myself)...and the list of people touched by Mrs. Fryar's teaching is a long one.

Jesse, I was not blowing my horn, I was blowing Mrs. Fryar's horn, I was very lucky to know her, and I know it! Terry.

This story, Maridell Fryar, is a terrific tribute to the debate coach who did what great teachers do -- show us how to learn what we need to know, and then provide an opportunity to do it.

What a wonderful love letter to someone who made you a wealthy man, although you had the creativity to make it a going concern. She was an incredible teacher to bypass your negativity to make a scholar of you.

Nice story and nice tribute. I'm sure Ms Fryar would be proud to read this. Very nicely told and good luck on the contest. I would have liked to have read a view into a specific moment that was impactiful, maybe with some dialogue, and reflections throughout life, etc. But, it was a very nice piece.

Thank you for reading my story. I did not address a specific moment because for me, at least my education, was a process, not an event.

In high school, I had two years for Mrs. Fryar to work on me, and then another year in college, and many years through a friendship.

What I wanted to convey was a lifetime impact, not a moment.
I am not trying to get you to change your rating, but I did want you to understand my thinking. Thanks again, Terry.

Well done Terry. All it takes is some-one to believe in a student, and find his potential, and then that student will thrive. Well-written, and best wishes for the contest.

She made a great, ad lasting, impression on you, Terry, when
you were at a impressionable age. She could see the potential
you had, and worked hard to develop it. I enjoyed reading your
contest entry. Your many examples and those which were a direct
result of her intervention were laid out great.
Best wishes in the contest, Jan

i relate for I was lost and then found by one Navy Chief who saw in me what I myself was blind to see. One thing led to another, and before I finished selling at 58, I had been inducted into the Sales Hall of Fame and had a run of 14 straight years leading my company in Sales in either Carolinas

Good teachers inspire students to achieve for a lifetime, even though they may not ever realize the effect they've had on particular students. I still remember some of my high school teachers. It's good you can still get in touch with Ms. Fryar, who I'm sure you've made aware of the impact she has had on your life. Best wishes in the contest.
