For someone who tends to favor free-style or unique-style poetry, you've been doing very well lately with more traditional forms. You did beautifully here with rhythm and rhyme, and you did a great job of showing the dog's personality. I loved the line, "but he loved me too. Or did he condescend?" In my honest opinion, with the rest of your poem showing such love and respect for the dog, I could have done without the last line. Of course, that's just one person's opinion.

Thanks for your praising comments.
If you knew Chester, you'd know that last line was one of the most memorable aspects of his presence, unfortunately, haha.
-
Oh dear. Then be happy you survived to tell the tale!

As a dog person, I believe dogs know exactly what they are doing. They know to come when you call. They know the word "No!" They know what pleases you, and when they're angry at you, they know how to pay you back. I know Chester knew how he smelled after rolling in the dead seal. You've capture the essence of Chester in your poem. Best wishes in the contest.

'Essence of Chester' was a particularly rank smell, haha.

A very nice poem about your favorite = but sometimes smelly retriever. It is well written, rhymes well, and follows the required format. Best of luck in the contest! Evi

Thank you.
Smelly Chester was a wonderful dog.

He sounds like quite a character, but because you use the past to talk about him, I assume he passed away. If so I'm sorry for your loss.
My dog also understands and obeys whenever I tell her off. My cat is a different story.
I love your poem and the last two lines are hilarious.
I'm very grateful to you for making me smile. Today has been a tough day.
Good luck in the contest.

To write the poem, I remembered this dog from many years ago. My relationship with his owner is over now, and smelly Chester is dead. I miss Chester more than I miss his owner.
I hope your day improved. I'm sure you got good company from your pets.
-
I'm away from my dog right now and I miss her lots. My daughter says I'll miss Becka more than her when she leaves home.
Have you got a new pet now?
-
That dog I wrote about was my now ex-boyfriend's.
I hope you get back with Becka soon.
I have always had a cat. My current cat is Lily. I write about her quite a lot, and even pretend that she writes the occasional posting here on FS, as a pen-friend to Wendy G's dog Sunny.
-
That?s such a fun idea.
-
Sunny writes back and posts stories on FS too!

He sounds like a normal dog, one who loves to get into water and play. Then get up onto the couch and rest. The picture is great. It is a picture of a lovely dog. I love retrievers. They are beautiful to me. Thank you for sharing this great story.

I agree, retrievers are lovely dogs - just not when they stink and are wet, haha.

Have a great day.

Thank you! Chester was a special dog.

What an awesome picture, I enjoyed reading about
Chester. He sounded 'all dog.' Those kind that take
over everything as theirs including your heart. Of course,
he was just marking you as his when he rubbed that horrible
smell on you. Good job with the rhymes, flow, and imagery.
Best wishes in the contest, Jan

Chester was certainly 'all dog' - a good working dog and companion, with a big heart for love.

This dog poem, The Brave-hearted Softie, is a neat verse about a good pup and pal who made a big impression by his abilities as well as his antics. Fun.

I am not familiar with this breed but he looks remarkably like an Irish water spaniel. The coat of tight curls was excellent at fending off the rain and was quick drying too. The colour is an exact match too. They were much in demand amongst the water-foul hunters.

I googled Irish water spaniel and saw quite a similarity in the coat and colour, but the spaniel's head was more fluffy almost like a poodle's. Chesapeake Bay retrievers are much larger than spaniels.
-
Irish Water Spaniels have a typical height of 21 to 24 inches and weight of 45 to 65 pounds, this is bigger than all the other spaniels including the clumber which is generally regarded as being the largest spaniel.
-
That's bigger than I thought.
The internet says this about Chesapeake bay retrievers:
''Males stand 23 to 26 inches at the shoulder and weigh 65 to 80 pounds''
-
The water spaniel tends to get ignore. Elsewhere we are told that the clumber is the largest of the spaniels.
-
I've never heard of a clumber spaniel so I googled it. The Irish water spaniel is much nicer looking! The English wouldn't want something Irish being better.
-
Probably!

Hahaha! That was totally unexpected:-). Everyone should be so lucky to have a dog like your "good boy".
Nicely rhymed poem about man's best friend - put a smile on my face.
