We are but motes, yearning for purpose

Truthfully Mike I had to think about this one. I hope that was your goal. I think that you in the first stanza feel the strength and power of your words to make a difference But then self-doubt seeps in. "A single mote among your peers." Then you want to reinvent yourself. We all wish at times to be someone different; not to be lost in the mix.
Finally, I believe that in the end, you realize that life requires one to step up to the plate.
This is a stunning and thoughtful word.
Best wishes,
Mary

Thank you so much, Mary - I really appreciate you sharing your response with me :-). I find it comforting to think I'm tiny and pointless, because it frees me to be expressive and honest without fearing I will cause too big a ripple!

This is excellently written and a well-thought-out poem. Although it was long each stanza spoke to a different part of the whole theme of self-determination. I know this is my interpretation but you said in your author's notes to decide the meaning! I love the musical references especially singing or humming the blues! The rhymes are wonderfully chosen and placed with care upon the altar of poetry. Thanks for lulling us to awaken with a song in our hearts!

I love your philosophical slant. We are mighty in our insignificance! Within the vastness of time and space there is only one you... What you write, what you share, how you wield your pen...this reverberates with each of us, who, like Emily Dickinson, once whispered: "I'm nobody, who are you? Are you nobody too?"

It's the best thing about writing, I think...

Finding ourselves in our own words!

We are cogs in the wheel of life but every move we make has a knock on effect and we disturb the status quo with good or bad deeds. We always make a mark on life and make a different which is significant and writing about it can indeed touch another soul. I think we learn to either embrace the battle in life or fear it. A poignant write Mike, love Dolly x

I read it a couple of times, and the first time I thought it was about someone who thought he was God getting put in his place, then the second time I wasn't so sure. I thought it might be about someone who had just outgrown the teenage angst. If you set out to boggle my mind, you succeeded.

lol, apologies for the boggle, Cindy. I think, for me, it's about the split personality of creatives - feeling at once like we own the world and don't deserve to be trodden on. Confidence and doubt are constant duellers :-)

very powerful and moving poem about the meaning of life, sort of a meta poem about poetic inspiration, and the life of a poet in a sometimes uncarying universe.

This is amazing writing in which you seem both to feel the power of your own words and then to suffer self doubts in which you want erase everything and reinvent yourself. At last you come to some understanding of the meaning of life and the choices you have. I really love those last two lines "a poet in the universe is both a blessing and a curse. I wish I still had a six.

I can see what you're talking about when you say what you have to say without thinking, as I've said, sometimes we are simply endowed with the gift of writing or not, it's not our cleverness, but more the seed within us, I think we are kindred spirits in a large, mixed pond of spirits, not quite the same, this is a classic, smooth, easy to relate to, which should be the essence of poetry. Well done, Mike, good work, blessings Roy

I enjoyed your poem. It took me strange places with strange thoughts- but is that not what it means to be a poet in the universe. Indeed, we have strange pages in our lives to draw our great ideas from.

Thank you, Verna :-). I think you're right - a poet's mind is a chaotic thing, but in a beautiful way!

Wow. I read this silently the first time, and out loud the second. Very few poems have me go back for that second read, but yours hits a solid chord with me, sincere and yet not sloppy, original and yet not over the top abstract. I might just go back for thirds. Thank you for posting this one, and I whish you great luck.

Thanks so much, Laurie :-). It's a struggle for me to reign things in sometimes - I do risk disappearing up my own posterior when I get into the poetic flow. So I'm thrilled to hear I managed to keep this relatable. I really appreciate the wonderful response.
