Great story about the cars in your life. I'm so glad you and your brother weren't seriously injured. Your mother had a long road ahead of her. I hope she healed all the way. No seat belts back then.
I had to laugh about the first car you bought being a pinto. It's one of those cars that history is not kind to. I think motor vehicles in general are a universal language. My brother has a passion for cars from his first Hot Wheels. It changed over to trucks, but it's the old ones that he restores that he really loves. Cruise Nights from late spring till the first snow flies is where you'll find him showing his 64 F-100. I've been to many and it seems the crowds of people are happy, and excited to tell their stories of a car they once owned. My dream car is a 1966 red Ford Mustang!

I really enjoyed reading this. I loved how you were able to capture major moments of your life, but behind the wheels of different cars.

The Navajo interior was a little shocking, but your observation about it was funny and it made me chuckle. Great job!

Excellent true story. A couple of grammar changes to tighten it up, maybe. Para 4 = two door Para 5 = That year, Para 6 = girl, Para 7 = ,anyway Para 8 = whatever Para 9 = ,anyway. Para 18 = into the dash, . Other than that, a good true story. I remember the days of the love affairs with the cars and each generation is probably still having them.

My first car was a 1950 Studebaker with arrow-point front end -- you know the kind. I customized the headlights and taillights and had the arrow removed, leaving a gaping circle. Now this you won't believe: my dream was to have a fishbowl with live fish fitted into the hole. Of course, after an hour's driving, the fish would be fried. And if they survived that, someone at school, with a baseball bat would have shattered my dreams and their home. Someone apparently talked enough sense in me that I abandoned my vision.

Your story brought a ton of memories back to me. Thank you for that. I also had a sixty-something MGB. My favorite all-around car.

I wish you well in the contest. Oh, and shouldn't your last line be: " ...and herself as we wait [ed] for help to arrive. (?) You described that so vividly, along with the cataloging of injuries. I'm sorry you had to have that memory to write about.

Thank you, I do think those Studebakers were cool, and the MGB's were too, if you didn't have to work on them. Terry.

What an incredible event, a head on collision, but the other driver will suffer with that one, poor girl, I can remember falling asleep, heading to other side of the road, I'm sure God woke me up, before I could do any damage, I remember my youth, and every car I ever owned, well done, blessings Roy

Hi Terry, that is a terrific, and at the same a very sad and tragic story. Yes, cars are terrific, but the can also be deadly if something goes terribly wrong. And something did go terribly wrong in this tale. Good luck, Ulla:)))

Well, that story took a turn there at the end, didn't it? I was all ready to review based on my knowledge of cars (little to none) and young men (even less). Your last few paragraphs, though, just made my heart drop into my stomach. I'm glad you were okay and the other injured folk lived - but that poor girl losing her parents. If she is still alive, I'll bet she remembers that as a memorable experience in her life as well - with even darker memories than yours.

As always, a riveting story, well told and relatable. Thanks for posting it, Terry!

This was quite the story! It started out describing cars and their various appeals, then ends with a horrific accident where not everyone survived. You told the story well, and held the reader's interest from beginning to end. Thanks for sharing!

Your story is full of colorful descriptions that are well explained and presented in a way that your reader can 'see it'. Well done on a good narrative, excellent choices for your illustrative descriptions and an overall flow to the piece. Good luck.

That was a heck of a story, Terry. All those cars, the journey through life, and then that terrible crash at the end! You and your mother and brother were very lucky, even though your mum was badly injured. That she was praying for everyone while she waited for help, shows what a strong, wonderful lady she was. Well done, I enjoyed reading it and wish you luck in the contest. :) Sandra
