Unfortunately, everything changes. That includes favorite locations.

Hope your time there went better than you seemed to expect it to.

Guess when one lives in almost isolation, they have to make due best they can.

    Hi Brett,
Thanks so much for taking the time tor read and review this post. It's all a distant memory now. When I got to town, the boat, which I had paid big bucks to get covered with a waterproof cover, was totally moldy inside. The guy who did the work didn't leave a window open and no one mentioned leaving a fan running, so the first five days I spent cleaning up mold. At least the boat got really clean. The prices were more of a shock than I was ready for. I paid $3.00 for two bananas and $15.00 for a gallon of milk. Fortunately I had a daughter in Juneau who shopped for me and sent out groceries, but the freight was 60 cents a pound to get here, so it was still spendy, but less than in Hoonah. The good part was that I made some nice money in July, but August was kind of a bust. I left on September 3, after being there for 84 days. I have to go back this year and paint the boat and put zinc on the bottom and hope I can sell it. Have a blessed day.

Fun, fun, fun. One can imagine that working on a commercial fishing boat has its good days. I mean, a really good imagination would be required.

Thanks Bill for the fine review and comments. When the weather is good and the fish are biting, it's hard to imagine a better job. It's all the times in between that can be a real challenge.
    Have a blessed day.

Great post and background on the changing nature of Hoonah. It sounds like you miss the old days and the quiet times. Hopefully, you will have many evenings on the porch drinking tea. Have fun and safe travels.

Thanks so much Tim, I appreciate the kind comments. I do miss the "good old days" terribly. I don't know why so much that passes for progress seems like anything but. Like so often happens, a few people make decisions that impact the masses, and they benefit, but everyone else is left dealing with the mess.
Have a blessed day, and keep turning out those great poems. You have massive talent.

I'll miss you and will keep you in my prayers, dear friend.

Empty shelves happen here, too. I've been stocking up on things that will keep, like dried beans, rice, etc. I figure if it gets touch, I can make quite a meal on cornbread and beans with an onion.

Please be careful. It sounds like you'd rather be on that deck, and maybe it's time. Let me hear from you as soon as you can. Stay safe!

Hello Yvonne, my very good friend. I appreciate your wonderful comments and of course your prayers. I'm planning on writing down all my FanStory friends so that I can remember to pray for them daily. I feel so truly blessed to have you in my circle of friends. I'm sure I'll find food, after all, I'm a fisherman. I might get tired of fish, but I might come home really healthy! God bless you gal. Stay safe.

Nice story, Well told.
It wouldn't be long before the year would be over, granted it was almost June. - My dictionary confirms my gut. Exceptionally implies superior. 'extraordinarily' might work better
at what expense?. - oops
'Perhaps I'll be ...' - This 52 word sentence would read better broken up.
Best wishes.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and review this Wayne. I appreciate your suggestions too. When I'm done here, I'll look back over the post and make corrections. I hope your summer is full of good things. Have a blessed day.

Tom,

I will miss you and your stories. I think you are anxious with good reason. Things aren't looking to improve anytime soon. The expense of living on the island/boat may just be too much and the flight back to the mainland might be $500 when it's time to come home. But I will never forget your poem about how much you love fishing. May God bless your fishing season and deliver you safely home to your wife at the end of it.

Sue

I spent forty five years there and ==> forty-five

While there are some jobs provided, one has to weigh at what expense?. -- awkward. Suggest rewording. -- "one has to weigh the benefit-expense ratio"?

    Hello Sue,
I will miss you and your stories as well. Fight the good fight gal. We need people like you who won't compromise their values in order to fit in. Hopefully I'll make at least enough to fly back. If push comes to shove I'll drive the Alcan Highway. That would be a trip for sure. I appreciate your suggestions, I'll go back and take a look at the post and make some corrections. Thanks for your patience in dealing with my errors. I'm making a list of my Fan Story friends so that I can remember to keep them in my prayers. I suspect I'll have lots of time on my hands and what better way to spend it?
Have a blessed day my friend.

Thanks for the update. Be well and may seas be fair. I rode a cutter three different times for a total of nine months, t.a.d from the Navy for radiosonde flights. Alaskan waters can be dicey and puff up with little warning. Where do you live when not on Hoonah?

    Hi Tom,
I'm so glad you took the time to read this post. Yeah, the water can change pretty quickly, and with a top speed of about seven knots, it's kind of hard to get away from the lump when it comes up. I live in Wasilla now, about forty or so miles north of Anchorage. You stay safe as well. Stock up your pantry and keep your tanks full. We're in for heavy rolls I believe.
    Have a blessed day.

It sounds like it will be an expensive trip Tom with some ridiculous prices to be paid. This is what happens in remote places, everything is a lot more expensive. Retailers take advantage. We have a supermarket retailer over here called Tesco and when they open smaller stores called Tesco Express, they always charge a bit more for their goods because they are convenience stores. Getting back to your story, I expect you will enjoy the fishing and I hope you have a wonderful time, love Dolly x

    Hello Dolly,
Thanks so much for your understanding and good wishes. It's going to be spendy for sure. I'm hoping that I make enough money fishing to actually come home with a profit, and perhaps a better idea of whether I want to keep doing this. When the fish are biting and the weather is good, it's sure a lot of fun, but when the storms are raging and the hooks are empty, I wonder what in heavens name I'm doing. Keep cranking out those great poems gal. I'll have plenty to read when I come home.
    Have a blessed day.

This work has reached the exceptional level

A neatly composed story with plenty of illustrative details to cause your readers to feel the way you are feeling as you contemplate this change. I will pray that all goes well for you and your boat, but also that God will make it clear to you whether or not this might be your last time to do this. It sounds like you are feeling some reluctance but I know you love fishing, so there are pros and cons. I hope you have a delightful time and a profitable season... and please keep a daily journal. We need another book from you when you get back. God bless you and guide you. MM

    Hello Adonna,
You are so gracious gal. Thanks so much for turning my whining session into something much more noble. I'm anxious about what to expect. I just need to keep in mind that God is in control, not me, fortunately. In order to have a story that is worth telling, there needs to be some trouble or hardship I suppose. Lord knows what is awaiting me, but He's always gotten me through, and this time should be no exception. It's harder to deal with things as I get older though. Ah well, as the saying goes, people in hell want ice water. I so appreciate your friendship. I'm making a list of my Fan Story friends so that I can support them in prayer. You're all special to me. Keep writing gal, you've been blessed with an abundance of talent. We don't want to hide our light under a basket.
    Have a blessed day.
