Adorable!
I love the moral outrage at the audacity of some posters!
That's why I don't buy certificates (well, one reason. Another is that I am cheap. And poor - barely enough to keep myself in contests, but that's another matter.)
I love how she knows exactly what he's going through.
A thoroughly enjoyable story! Thank you!

Hi Gareth, you've just told the truth, whether we'll admit it or not. The site is banking on it, otherwise they wouldn't survive. On the other hand, it's a lovely community and gives some of us mortal a lot of joy. So there it is, we all have a choice.
John glared at Jean = Jean. All best, Ulla:)))

The one that cracks me up is that folk don't see it in themselves and believe everything that the money buys. lol Many thanks Ulla. G

Writers indeed! More like writing contests and their convoluted standards. Enjoyed reading this, although honestly felt I was laughing at myself. It was funny and a little dismaying at the same time.

Found only one small problem: "John glared at jean for a brief moment before they both burst out in a fit of giggles." Typo, capitalize Jean.

Ah, at last, someone willing to show how it really is. I'm amazed more people haven't figured it out. When I first joined FS, I thought all this was so important, until one day it dawned on me. At the end of the day, what did it all really mean? It was mostly for my own enjoyment.

Yep, do it for the enjoyment. Don't believe the smoke being blown and stop wasting pumps & money! lol

I wish there was a limit to even the playing field. on some other sites you get two payouts depending on word count reviews which earns you the right to post. It's a nice system. G

It's a good thing we don't do it for the money! The twist in the tale is a sobering reminder that the maths can be even more ridiculous in the real world. Maybe sometime in the future someone will say, "My granddad was a poet." Let's just hope he doesn't snigger when he says it!

I have a little bookshelf at home with my published work on it. It's very nice to see and that's what I mainly work at these days. I love the site, though, and without it I wouldn't be published.

I use the site mainly for enjoyment and for trying things out. I just got my fourth honourable mention in the writers of the future competition recently which is a real standard! lol Much appreciated. G

As far as I can see, there are three ways of doing this: Firstly, publish rarely, review lots and promote to the hilt. You are sure to get a good all-time rating. Ignore the contests. Secondly, publish and be damned. You will not get the rating, or even many reviews, but you might do well in a contest from time to time. Thirdly, pump real money into the system. This allows you to publish well-promoted pieces more often and not bother to review. Personally I refuse to review such pieces, and if everyone followed my example at least hard work would be rewarded, rather than just wealth that has no intrinsic merit. Kate xx

Writers! Don't even get me started. LOL. But I must admit, changing the subject is always the way to go and get your own way. Thanks for starting my day off with a smile. Wish I had a six.

lol thanks Ric. I'm off to kill a child, take a photo of a puppy and write a god-loving poem. It's the key to success. G

Haha, oh my! This is a clever bit of lip to, um, to ... well to me and those others who post near the top of page one! There is an almost slot-machine mentality that goes with promoting. I get the cert, then 10 pumps, usually ... and see it takes me to high 80s or low 90s. I don't take the time from there to figure out how much funny money it will cost me to get to number 3, 2, or 1. I just start droppin' the coins. I stand convicted.

This is really some good and funny stuff, G!

"Argh!" John Harris dug the heels of hand into his temples, scrunching his eyes tight. [Great opening line. I believe you left out the "his" before hand.]

from their resting place hung around her neck. [These are the little extras that give your stories pop!]

I always get something extra from your posts, G. Thank you for that.

Jay

Oh my. You are the bravest of the brave. Will this be reviewed by the CEC? Accepted? You have written what is in the minds of anyone not within the select group of friends that win, win, win. They may be better some of the time but all of the time? Be well and thanks.

Gareth,

You need to take this post down immediately, you goof. If those crazy, crazies aren't smart enough to figure it out for themselves -- and it's not hard -- obviously they are digging into wallets to pay for that - no way they are on the front page every day and often for two or three posts(!) by reviewing. Excuse me. Hang on a sec -- (BWHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!)

--cough-- Pardon.

Then you and I and all the rest get the pleasure (or pain, whichever) of reading and taking the money - to, yes - PAY for OUR posts. Thank you, very much. They are making the system work much easier than in the past. YAY!

Also, I suppose John thought Jean had taken in just about all she could handle of our FS nonsense. He did not correct her on the ribbon issue-- that only the first place winner in the most contests get those ribbons. Oh, well.

A wee, small note:
--> Gareth glared at (J)ean for a brief moment before they both burst

Thanks!

It is easy money, true but sometimes I start at the other end. There's some amazing writers on here who don't get read and then disappear, sadly. G

You are absolutely right. As always.

    Does that get tiring?
