You did a super job, Judi. I imagine you could fill a book
on more of the names--the good, the bad, the ugly. I
enjoyed learning about each one you highlighted. I like
how Correct was named. What a special honor to have
towns named after you. I believe most states have a long
history of how names came to be, so they were thinking
of you then. I liked how you categorized your towns you
focused on. It's amazing what one could learn by studying
these names--like the author of the book you referenced.
Thanks for the history lesson, Jan

Thanks for your review and comments. I liked the story about Correct, but Santa Claus is really the most attention-getting name in the state. Baker included 4000 names in his book. Yes, other states have their own interesting place names. Extra special thanks for the generous sixer. judi

As America is a melting pot of different European cultures, you have a wide range of names as the land was new mainly uninhabited; whereas in England we have fewer settlers from Europe that have influenced our place names and many of them are ancient and few are new. Talking of "ville" makes me think of the "Green Mile" movie, when one of the inmates was told that the pet mouse would be rehoused in "Mouseville", when he dies in the electric chair. Ha ha ha, I thought that was quaint and very American, I enjoyed your write Judi, love Dolly x

This was fun to read. The names of cities and town are often so unusual and I always enjoy hearing what they are and especially how they came to be. Many of the names you mentioned are also name that are in Mississippi where I grew up. We had Mount Olive, Mount Pisgah, Philadelphia and Greenville and Decatur to name a few. There is a Lawrenceburg in Tennessee where I now live. I see you have a Shelbyville. We have a Shelby county. I'll try to add a chapter later.

How fun! I enjoyed your fun name stories! I especially liked the Dairy Queen pronunciation of Vevay! And you can really see the French and German (and Greek) influences on the names. But I liked the Santa Claus story best. Actually, I never knew the right pronunciation of Terre Haute! I pronounced as if it were French - ter-oht. Thanks for the help!!

none was more of them (has?)
If the come across (they)

Thanks for your review and comments. Here I am, a native of Indiana, and I've never been to Santa Claus! I had fun writing this. I hope others will contribute. judi

Thanks for all these fabulous names in response to Helen's request for regional names, I still haven't heard one that could rival "South Piddle" in southern England, beautifully written Judy, I appreciate you, well done, blessings Roy
