You do an awesome job of presenting amusing pondering based on each name, rather than dropping them just for fun in isolation. Living in England, we're used to silly place names, but (predictably) it's usually because they sound rude :-). This was a great fun read!

Thanks, Mike. I'm always petrified of veering out of the poetry lane. This one was just too much fun not to try. I can be pretty silly sometimes and Helen was SO inspiring!

Your first paragraph is hilarious. You let the reader know right from the beginning what a treat they are in for. When I read the name of this strange town, I thought of the same idea: "Highway 101" I'm right with you on this: "I'd wager the advisory board was raging with testosterone." You could be a stand up or sitting commedian. This is so good, I have to give it A+.

Thanks, Liz. If I could do my life over (Thank God that won't happen)-I'd love to be an entertainer or a comedy writer. I am a natural-born goof...and welcome any opportunity to prove it!

It's been a week of very sad news. This was just plain fun! Your six is very generous and I so appreciate it!

Thank you, Karenina, for researching and sharing all these strange names. You sure came up with a lot of different ones. I don't think I had heard of any of them before.

What a fun read. I love it that you took the time and energy to construct a riff based on the article you'd reading Mental Floss. I am glad you included the link. The creative spirit and sprightly humor in this piece are irresistible. The research seems solid so the piece is informative as well as fun. It is apparent from the writing that you enjoyed sharing this with readers.

Thanks for the six! Oh my, my husband will not like that anyone encouraged my silly sense of humor. (Smirk)...

I did crack up when I read that Mental Floss article and could not resist tossing in my side remarks!

It WAS fun! Glad you enjoyed it!

Why not jump in and add a chapter? It's GREAT therapy!

Thank you for sharing these names. This is interesting and fun to read. I will see if I can find a few names myself. I'm vacationing most of June, but will see.

(This "cruise" was no "carnival!" (missing ending ')')

Thanks for the editorial heads up, I've corrected it. Enjoy your vacation and yes, I'd love to read the names you come up with! This was a nice vacation from all the tumult in the world, for me!

This is a great collection of names that took you on a wide-ranging voyage. My entry will stay closer to home, and only figure towns and villages I've visited. In themselves this will add a few to the list I think. Of yours I liked wonowon the best - really funky. Enjoyed this post very much. Kate xx

Love that "funky" word ~ makes me feel young again. (Ah, if only!)

You know I rarely veer out of the poetry lane, so this was sort of a nice change of pace for me.

I'd love to see a chapter by you!

    Thanks,

It is good to feel young! I feel lousy today. I have got sick. Can't even swallow... living on codeine and honey!

Oh no! Did you test for Covid??? I hope that's not it!
reply by Katherine M. (k-11) on 05-Jun-2022
covid test is for tomorrow (monday) if I'm not better. Saturday evening / Sunday impossible to get hold of a test. I slept Okay with the codeine though and honey seems to be easing things off a bit.

My Covid symptoms were eerily similar to what you are describing...

If it's like here you are already doing what we were all instructed to do!

Oh dear. This is disasterous. I hate this virus. I shall skulk in my bedroom and produce inordinate amounts of anti-covid drivel, as per my original New Year's Resolution.

I've played Covid twice! I really don't want round three!

Well, we never know what Helen will come up with next, and as two of those who I enjoy reading most, a calibration between the two had to be a winner. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Ric. A bit of the silliness coming out in prose ~ somewhere I rarely go.

This was fun! Then again, Helen often inspires!

I thank you MOST kindly, sir!

As I've told you many times before, as much as I like your moving poetry, your prose takes your writing to a different level for me. And as you would figure, silliness is one of the most important elements in good writing for me. Outstanding, young lady!

Hi there,

these are funny. We have some cracking place names here in the UK & Ireland. i often get accused of making up place names such as Portavogie but it's a real place.

We also have Ballybogey (as in snot)
Fingerinhoe (kind rude, speaks for itself)
Cockfosters
Shooter's Bottom
Upper (& Lower) Dicker...

I think someone was taking the piss...

OH, GEEEEEZ. Well, you could write quite the chapter in Helen's book!

    "Fingerinhoe?"
    Not exactly subliminal!
    Your examples are excellent.
Well into the "What the heck were they thinking?" category!

Thanks for reading my (relatively tame) offering.

It was fun to write something light and airy!

This is fun... I noticed Helen's posting and hope to contribute something sometime. (I've been to Hell. It's a little village in Norway.) I've actually been to Batman in Turkey, and as an Aussie I was pleased that Tasmania got a mention. I enjoyed your humorous comments.

You've been to Batman? The photos on the web seem lovely.

I read on Wikipedia that "Batman, Turkey, "made world news in 2008 when its mayor, Huseyin Kalkan, announced to the media that he was planning lawsuits against Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan, makers of the Dark Knight movie trilogy." He proclaimed "There is only one Batman in the world,"

Alas, that lawsuit never materialized, but good on the mayor for making a splash!

I read a really warm day in Hell was about 64 degrees. Guess there's no Hotazel there?

I gather you returned home. So you've "been to hell and back" as the saying goes!

It was fun to just play with names for awhile. Jump in! I'd love to read your chapter!

    Thanks,

    Karenina

This a clever little story that would charm the rabbit right of the hole. So let me get this straight. You took up travel guide now? JK but what a fun story as you unraveled some pretty cool places but have good sound advice not to go there.
Not sure my review helps it any as it's late, but I did enjoy your story.

I love your review! Never ever too late to hear from a friend!

This is one of those multiple author "books" any of us can begin, and any of us can join in on.

Helen wrote chapter one and I liked the feel of laughter in my heart.

I don't "do" A lot of prose, but this was fun!

Come on in, the water's fine!

So many crazy names out there...

I'd love to see your chapter next!

    Thanks!

    Hugs,

    Karenina
