Your commentary was well-written, even if I don't agree on all points. I'll not get into those or this review wouldn't fit in the box. It did make me think. The one sentence that bothered me was "After the massacre ended, and his bloodshed was spilled.." Not sure you meant the bloodshed he caused or that his own blood was shed in the end...? Either way, bloodshed doesn't spill. At any rate, I'll bet you get a lot of feedback on this one! Five stars for presenting your thoughts on a very raw and touchy subject!

Hi Brett,

Some interesting issues arising form this.

After the massacre ended, and his bloodshed was spilled, - was wondering if this should be 'blood was spilled'? Bloodshed suggests it's already been spilt.

I would also like to know if they even had Green Cards to legally be in this country? - there doesn't appear to be an evidence to suggest he was illegally in the country.

Does it not make sense that with better upbringing perhaps Salvador Ramos would not have committed this grievous transgression?- this old argument doesn't really hold any water any more. We like to think this but it isn't true.

at some point in his worthless existence, like it or not, the world did not revolve around him - missing end punctuation here.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott well said, "Anyone who shoots his grandmother in the face has to have evil in his heart." Among other major deficiencies- not sure I agree with that sentiment wholeheartedly. I work with troubled kids and sometimes it's the grandmothers who carry out abuse on them. Some of it's horrific and shooting them could well be justified...

Ramos further complicated the attack on his grandmother by stealing her vehicle, a car he had no knowledge of how to drive.- well, she didn't need it anymore. he must have some knowledge of how to drive it to use it.

I ask, shouldn't the parents of 18 year olds be much more involved in their lives than that?- legal age for marriage is 18 in Texas (younger if emancipated). In more than half the states it's lower than that. Alaska is 14 (which is truly shocking!)

Oh, that's right. There are those who strongly believe parents have no place meddling in their kids' lives, nor should they monitor their behaviors. To that, I say a resounding BS!- this I agree with but there comes a time when it stops being the parents responsibility. In the UK that would probably be around age 16 which is legal age of consent and marriage.

-there were 34 incidents in 2021 alone (the highest number since 1999)- the US is well on its course to beating that this year, sadly. To date this year it's 27 and we're not halfway through yet.

I get the second amendment right but when that was put into place, there were no semi-automatic rifles around. Why not go back to the type of weapons the amendment was introduced to safeguard?

The big issue as well is that guns have no other purpose other than to maim or kill. NONE. Even knives have other purposes.

the amount of accidental shootings is disturbing. The amount of kids injured or killed by misadventure featuring firearms is astounding and disturbing.

But guns are okay. Kinder eggs, however, are deemed lethal...

this is a good opinion piece and with all such pieces it does raise interesting questions.

nice job
G

Much appreciate your in-depth comments about my Editorial. So many points of view reference guns, the 2nd Amendment, and all. Good to hear other opinions.

You made many valid points. It's a scary time to be out
and about most anywhere in the USA. As you say, guns
don't kill people, it's people using those guns. After an
incident, it's easy for the two sides for and against gun
control to become vocal. But what do they actually do to
solve anything? Yes, some states have improved, but
soon it dies down until the next shooting. You were brave
to offer this post.
Thank you for sharing, Jan

We are all desperate for answers on how we can curtail the senseless murders. But so far, we just keep making the same suggestions and rehashing similar ideas, while doing nothing. I don't have the answers, and apparently, neither does anyone else. But, it's time to do something, now, anything! Sadly, there will always be sick, twisted, minds. And until, we can change the teachings of children and how they are raised, we aren't likely to catch the problem at its roots. According to what I last saw on the news, there are now 19 dead children and two teachers.

Needs work to be more readable. I would award this piece a 'four star' but don't want to be accused of punishing a writer for the content.
Were you aware that there were hundreds and hundreds of thousands of Hispanics living in Texas and New Mexico and Arizona and California who became American citizens immediately upon the U.S. taking the lands from Mexico? - no green cards required. Many of their families have been here longer than millions of whites, far longer than any other non-whites (except American Indians).
I do not believe guns kill people. People kill people. - Why do you have a problem with saying that 'people use guns to kill people'?
President Joe Biden detailed a list of measures that would help. Why not do what we can? WHY NOT?
Best wishes.

I said I would like to see their Green Card and meant that. I also believe it will take everyone working together to end school shootings.
reply by Wayne Fowler on 04-Jun-2022
You missed the point. American citizens don't need green cards anymore than you do.

Thanks for sharing your view on this, Brett. You've told me more about this horrible event than I have seen on our news. I agree with most of what you are saying. There are many factors that need to be considered when trying to find a solution to these shootings. Gun control is just one, but it's a big one. Without it the guns that are used are too easily obtained by people with mental health issues. I plan to write a piece from a Canadian point of view.

You know, Brett, I only have one answer to this well written essay, and you're not going to like it. A total ban on guns is the answer. But, oh no, guns are sacred in the US regardless the mindless killing. As long as the gun lobby is about this will never change. It's all about money, votes and power. I wonder how many more deaths you're all prepared to tolerate. Please do realise that my outburst is not aimed at you personally. I am your friend. But I feel so strongly about this. Ulla:)))

I partially agree with you actually...when guns are in the wrong hands.

Would you please cite me one example where a gun picked itself up, aimed, and killed anyone without being in some person's hand?

I will gladly like to see that example.

Guns by themselves are not explicitly bad...too many people are.
reply by Ulla on 03-Jun-2022
But, Brett, why do you have to have guns? Why is it so paramount? The wild West has long gone. Criminals will always know how to get hold of them, but these killings are not committed by criminals., They are committed by anyone who feel a bit slighted or annoyed, and the easy access to firearms makes it possible. No, a gun doesn't pick itself up and shoot, but the ready availability does. Again, please don't take this personally. My brother and I have some good debates about this. Ulla:)))

This it an incidence that has left all of us in horror of what occurred in that school room. I didn't hear what that mother said and I think I'm glad I missed that. No mother wants to believe they have raised a monster. She should probably kept her mouth shut. I don't know all the facts but if something isn't done it will keep happening. You called him an insane lunatic and if he was, he had a illness that needed to be treated. I heard a Ted talk by a psychiatrist who showed brain scans of people who make threats to kill. The insanity showed on the scan and they were treatable. I don't know all the facts, but I think there are a lot of young people are clinically insane, and if they remain undiagnosed, it will be another disaster in the making. From all the reports there were 19 children and 2 adults who died.

Brett, This is a very well written editorial about the school shooting in Valde, Texas. You used very good descriptive and very true words. It was a needless tragedy that should not have happened. Little children and those two teachers should not have died on that day. Thank you for sharing this with us! Blessings, Teri

Dear Brett, there is a common factor with these murders, and it is undeniable, guns! And if you make guns easily accessible to the criminally insane, then the 2nd amendment is STUPID. It happens nowhere else in the world, why? Because they don't allow dangerous weapons to be easily available, except for a valid reason, the 2nd amendment was made when there was an enemy present, unless your neighbour is your enemy. And then they were sluggishly loaded muskets, how can you possibly compare those days with today. Blessings, Roy

Okay my friend, which gun have you ever heard of picked itself up and shot someone without being in someone' s hand ? Guns in the wrong hands is the problem, not a firearm by itself. Of course there is no comparing a musket to modern weapons, except they both can kill. Regardless, the problem needs to be stopped. Appreciate the review.
