So many depressing names that point out different periods in time. In the growth of a nation there are surely many places that could have branded places with similar. Thanks for sharing another fine post.

I don't think I'd like to live in a town with such depressing names but then I live in a town name Ooltewah and rather like it after I got to know it was Cherokee for owl's nest. When we first moved here my husband swore he would never live in a town with a name no one could pronoun correctly and was hard to spell. Famous last words.

Lol. Please add a chapter and tell us all about Ooltewah. I love owls so that's so cool! Thanks so much, Beth!

Love your Dr Suess sentence. Clever.
There really are some beauties here but I think my favourite has to be the first one, the Dismal Nitch. Another interesting story Helen.
Cheers
Valda

My father was born in a district of Plymouth called Penycomequick. She must have come quick enough because my father survived the experience.

'intermarried with a natives and started a tribe.' >> You seem undecided whether this Welshman was monogamous or not. Lol. I know the Welsh are ar a randy lot but a whole tribe!

Lol! Thanks for catching that, Jim! I was indeed undecided as to how many he "married." I was completely surprised to learn about this story. Had you heard about it? I count on you to be the expert on all things Welsh. It was fascinating to learn about. Hugs and blessings!

This is so fun and educational. Yes, those settlers must've been a tad bit depressed. Florida has the hungry: Lone Cabbage, Picnic, and Two Egg. Don't mind if I do. Sending you my best today as always and six stars for this exceptional post,
Sal XOs

What a good idea, Helen / karenina. I particularly liked point no point (or perhaps it should have been called pointless point). I am gathering together a few English gems that Dolly didn't mention, to add to the collection. Kate xx

I enjoyed your geography and history lesson, full of fascinating details. Dismal Nitch is a wonderful name! I also laughed at Point No Point. Having a sense of humour is important for explorers enduring harsh conditions.

Corrections:

Madoc ab Owain Gwynedd, went to America in 1170 and intermarried with a natives and started a tribe. (native, singular, unless he was a polygamist)

President Andrew Jackson set aside this 640-acre area for the military (insert comma here) but eventually, (remove this comma) it was given to the city of Tacoma.

But before Europeans came to rename places, Native peoples already had already assigned place names. (remove one 'already')

Lol. I was guessing the Welsh prince was a polygamist. I fixed that thanks to several reviewers. But your other two finds are new! Thanks so much, LisaMay!! Hugs!

Lol. You're recounting all the names I've witnessed on my current two-month trip through Wa and Oregon. Great names. Man, Wa and Oregon are really beautiful states, though.

I'm glad you enjoyed those places, Tim! From your posts, you went much farther south than we did. Hope you add a chapter of funny named places, too!

Oh Helen! I can see this blossoming into a multi-author book! Each of us finding our own "Dismal Nitch" type of geographical names and contributing a bit of history...

There is :
Alone, Italy
Unfortunate Cove, in Canada
Mount Despair, in Montana
Defeated, Tennessee

Zikes!

If you need me I'll be down the rabbit hole!

(There's "Suicide Bridge" in Maryland!)

You start one and I'll jump in with both feet!

(Have I mentioned I once lived in BELCHertown, MA??)

Smile,

Karenina

Hi Helen, LOL... in my travels my sweet caring friend..
I run into some pretty strangely named places...and if
I wasn't always trying to get where I was going fast...
I have thought about stopping in some of them...and some
I would never try to stop there...

I have always felt the names have something to do with the places...I mean who would want to stay a Massacre Bay...

I love your story told sweet girl...and love the picture...
so very well written you...love you...Linda xxoo

Thank you so much, Linda! How are you? Are you done with babysitting this week? Hope your arm and shoulder are fully recovered from holding up large TVs!
    Hugs and prayers!

LOL...I am in therapy with my shoulder now...
no more holding up large TV's...Doctors orders...LOL...

and this was the last week for my babysitting...I told the kids...if you ever need someone to watch her when you go out...
you know where I am...even though after church I go to Donatta's for the rest of the day...and we go to a lot of the other things at the church as well...we have a ladies prayer night...and we just went on Friday to watch two series of The Chosen...so I'll see the baby (Eva) often...

    I'm doing well...Donatta and I had a couple hard days...the 31st was the day a year ago
Donatta's husband Keith passed...and my brother passed 2 1/2 months ago...so Memorial Day we watch Charlie Chan series...Keith loved the old shows...and so did we...some days are harder then others...but you just get by...

you have to do the same thing...you carry a lot of stress as well...how are your mom and dad doing???...still holding on to the same caretakers???...I hope and pray so...you said they were good...

well beautiful you...your always so welcome...big hugs and many prayers...
    love xxoo
