Who gets the points here? I chose this for several reasons: 2 of my dear friends are mentioned. I also love the topic. I've read a book by some author who went around the US to every state & discovered an unusual name in each state. This is fun too.

This is an interesting collection of areas named after the explorers' ordeals there. I think I will rename the town I grew up in Tabeefrum. We joked as young adults that our hometown was a great place to be from -- far from.

This is well written and learning a bit of history about the area was nice. I was a bit surprised after the Native people were brought up, that we weren't told the name they had for the area. I think that may be a good addition.

That would be good to know. I bet there wasn't any standardization of the original names if even known at all. Even Seattle came from Chief Si'ahl. Thanks for the review, Lance!

This has the makings of another interesting book, Helen. You've started it well with these many strange and depressing names of places. I know there are probably a number of strange names in Canada too. I'll have to look them up to find meanings/histories.

You're welcome, Helen. I did a bit of research yesterday and am putting something together. I had a spell of lethargy when it came to writing, now I suddenly have many things I want to write. We are heading out on a road trip to Nova Scotia on June 22nd, so I hope to get some of them onto my portfolio as drafts that I can post from my iPad while traveling. :)

Hello Helen,
What a delightful, entertaining post. I've heard some of the names listed here. There is a large fishing fleet that travels to Alaska every year and I guess that's where I've heard them spoken. What a great bunch of names. I can so relate to the depression that comes from the continuous cloudy, foggy, rainy weather of the coast. I think one manufacturer of fishing lures, Luhr Jensen makes some trolling spoons called Pt. Defiance. I may have even used them to some degree of success. Useless Bay- what a great name. How disappointing to come into a bay to anchor after a day out on the rough Pacific, only to find that there is no rest in that bay. It must be full of rocks or too shallow or facing the Pacific where the waves would pound all night. Well done gal, thanks for sharing this.

That place is more of a rest stop on a highway so people might camp there but not live there. Thanks so much for the review, Wendy! Hope you add a chapter of some fun Aussie place names.

With the hardships those early explorers and settlers experienced, no wonder they came up with names like disappointment, obstruction, and massacre. As far as I know, Indiana doesn't have such discouraging names. My favorite was George, Washington. Excellent presentation of stories behind these place names. judi
