Oh, yes! This is so good, Terry! And so accurate. (Well, I have to say that I wasn't aware that so much damage could occur because of a cherry bomb. I have heard of people getting their fingers blown off when they thought they could hold one when it went off.) The insurance company I worked for would have covered it ... but then promptly canceled the policy-holder or increased his deductible to $2,500.
But your story was so cogent. To contrast their intelligence with their inexperience and ignorance of life situations, was brilliant. My dad was a cop and I can't tell you how many times I heard, "Junie (yes, alas!) my job depends on you being a good boy. And I was just that. And my school friends knew that. So when there was grapevine news of a beach party with "broads and booze" and it got busted up by the cops ... it just about ruined my reputation on campus ... though I would never have squealed on them. (Well, I've gone pretty far astray, my friend.)

This is a delightful story and I think we have all seen brilliant people do really dumb things. They must have attended a well disciplined high school, because during my tenure, cherry bombs in the lidless school toilets were a favorite "prank." Sometimes the perps would escape without detection. Great story.

This was a great story. The mom called them Teenagers, and was correct. They caused one heck of a mess. There could have been much more damage. The explosion could have hit them, or the neighbors. Thankfully, they survived this wild experiment. Hopefully, they learned a lesson. Thank you for sharing.

Teenagers is right. I don't care how smart they think they are they are unable to consider the consequences' of any action of mischief they are about to embark on. There is a vast difference between being book smart and street smart. This story proves that, Terry. I can only imagine the shock their parents felt when they learned of this stupidity. As a mother of four boys, two of them with genius level IQ's, I completely understand how this happened. It's amazing teenage boys grow up to become adults. I loved your post and laughed throughout.
The explanation that the boys offered was that they wanted to see what would happen and find out exactly how loud the cherry bombs might be. (you can omit both 'that')
Their adroit wisdom suggested that a controlled muffled ignition would be best. (you can omit 'that')
Convinced that any sound would not be heard outside the house, they anxiously awaited the results. (you can omit 'that')

Apparently the old saying "Boys will be boys" should be adjusted to something like "Boys with too much time on their hands and not enough restraint, can be counted on to do something stupid." I know it does not have the pop of the other more popular saying, but it resonates with accuracy and truth.
