Wow, I must give them they are audacious and what the heck liberal arts, there is a fine line between saying and doing it. So here they are bombing the poor toilet to piece and getting boosted in a working schedule for the entire summer to pay off the damage. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

Superbly written and very enjoyable - I cannot fault it. I had to read the first paragraph a couple of times before I got the joke. I am British so I have an excuse!

Malcolm, thank you for the six stars!!! You are most certainly excused for not getting the joke the first time or two...after all, you guys lost that war that July 4th celebrates! Thanks, Terry

"Fourth, fifth, third" Clever way to open up your tale. I like the way it sounds too.

Para 15, 1st sentence: "styrofoam" should be "Styrofoam"
Para 16, 1st and 2nd sentence: "styrofoam" should be "Styrofoam"
Styrofoam is the brand name of a product, like Xerox is the name of both a company and a service (Xerox copies). So, Styrofoam has a first letter cap.
Para 15, 2nd sentence: remove comma between "them" and "and"
Last Para:

3rd Para from the last: I like your use of "mea culpa."

Boys will be boys. For me, what makes this tale so horrific is that it is listed as "non-fiction." It doesn't sound like the boys got everything they were counting on.

Laughing out loud....they blew it! It always amazes me how smart people do really dumb things! I'm sure the community didn't look too kindly at the parents or their children. Best of luck to you!

Hi Terry,
what a tale!
I guess youth is 'really' wasted on the young?
A very well written little story... and possibly a good lesson for the future budding scientists, and or, pranksters.

Loved the... 'The future is now in our hand. OUR CLASS WILL NOT BLOW IT!" And of course John had it right, the class did not in fact 'blow it', it was all John and Eric... and I guess they brought a new meaning to a real shit-show?

Thank you for sharing this very entertaining story... I really enjoyed the read and the fashion in which it was written.

With our thoughts we create...
the theory of evolution.

Kind regards,
James.

Oh dear! And all that preparatory explanation of the how smart these friends of yours were makes it even more incongruous that they would think of doing something like that. They say, in teen years, that the frontal cortex of the brain where decision-making occurs shrinks a bit and doesn't grow back until adulthood. For boys, it takes a little longer...
Thanks for the cautionary tale!!

So is an M80 anything like a cherry bomb? We once had quite the ordeal with those, but that's a different story completely. Y'know they maybe weren't thinking completely straight, but like the mom said, teenagers! These model students had spent so much time acting like adults, studying, getting into great colleges, so the temptation of doing one crazy, foolish stunt had to be overwhelming for these model students. Thankfully nobody was hurt. At least they didn't steal a car or worse. So I find it a little humorous and by now they are telling their kids to never do that. I loved the story as I found it delightful and refreshing. Thanks for the great story Terry. You are awesome!

Debi, Thank you very much! Eric's father did remark (although I did not include it) "Thankfully there were no girls involved!" Terry.

Terry,
I loved this post - you had me laughing all the way through it.
Two bright boys, to say the least! Just when you least expect it, adroit wisdom can give birth to 'dumber than dirt delinquents'.
I wonder why we pay insurance??? Glad to hear that these 'delinquent teenagers' worked to reimburse the damage that their brilliant brains had concocted.
"celebrating the fourth with a fifth starting on the third." I like the way that sounds, too.

Loved this story and the paradox between their high intelligence and what they did. Not sure what they expected to happen!!
You told it well with a great build-up. Very well written, with wit and humour.

Well , this is quite a story told very thoroughly.
It is humorous that two intelligent guys would think placing cherry bombs in a toilet was a good plan and not result in disaster.
There is a saying,
"some people have book sense and some have common sense."
My question is .....
were you involved in this story? Or were you friends with their families?
Either way, I thank you for sharing.

Eric's mother was my debate coach and longtime mentor. I heard the story a few years ago and have been thinking I might be able to make it pretty funny. Both guys very bright and did a dumb thing. Thank you, Terry.l
