Their cry IS haunting! And they are such elegant birds! I rounded a bend in the river in my canoe and came upon one. I was breathless!

That final line "gathering dusk" reminds me / sounds like "gathering dust." I wonder if the sound is so "familiar" that the heron's cries are just tuned out and are "gathering dust."

We have a small cottage on a lake, we hear the cries of a heron.

This was a wonderful haiku, Gypsy. It does present the heron as one with nature yet alone like a loon. The picture was fantastic. Blessed be and hugs!

Yes I do believe herons make a unique sound, they all tend to, except for those imitating sound stealers, this is beautifully written my friend, well done, blessings Roy
