Hi there,
This is a well put-together piece. You've done a good job with it.
"Guns don't kill people. People kill people". It is played loud and often. The truth is guns are bought to kill;- I think this is the crux of the gun issue. there is no other purpose for a gun other than to shoot something; to kill of maim. Even knives have other functions.
I wonder of the right to bear arms was restricted to only the type of weapons available at the time the amendment was made if it would make the difference.
Restrictions are un-constitutional.
approach could be modified and used in our places of worship, perhaps arming the minister or the Rabbi, the deacons and maybe the Sunday School teachers.- they don't need firearms, they're armed with the light of the Lord...
we need more prayer, more looking to a moral authority for guidance and we are in desperate need of more love, compassion, caring and the ability to forgive.- not sure I agree with this. the Bible, for example, is full of rather insidious and hideous things going on in the name of the lord which folk like to gloss over.
history of any mental affliction that would likely have an adverse affect on the person's ability to control his emotions or ascertain the difference between right and wrong.- one of thye issues with this is that anyone at any point could have a breakdown. 1 in 2 or 3 people suffer a depressive phase at some point in their life.

Thanks for the spag notice. It will be immediately corrected.
I certainly don't know the answers, but I do know we must make some efforts to increase gun safety or we will continue to pay the untenable price of both loss of lives and loss of freedoms we should be enjoying.
thanks so much for your time and your words. ann

It's good to read a balanced point of view on this issue. So many reach for extreme solutions in these cases, but such ideas are always unfeasible at best, and outright absurd at worst. Speaking as a non-American, the idea of needing guns to protect against one's own government just sounds bizarre. Like a militia could do anything if the government truly decided to 'come after' it's own people. All that happens is that those too convinced of something think they have a constitutional right to act against the government.
I'll pull back from my tangent! Yours was a clearly written, well argued article, and I very much enjoyed reading it.

Thanks so much for your encouraging review and time taken to share it with me. I appreciate both.
I wish I knew the answer to the gun question in America; I don't, but I do know, if we, as a people, don't make an effort to increase gun safety, we will continue to pay a price that exceeds the value of hiding behind an -at best- obscure amendment. Thanks for reading and commenting. ann

I had no problem with the length and have the same point of view. If you have to take a class to learn how to drive a motorcycle, even though you already own a car, to be licensed, then what is wrong with a new gun owner having to learn how to safely handle and use the gun. Isn't that how you become a law abiding citizen that the pro-gun people talk about? Why would a state decide it would be ok to own a gun, and keep it out in the open and not even have to register it. Are we returning to the Wild West? The talking point of "no Law would have stopped the killing" is such a lame reasoning. How do they know, they haven't even tried. Don't even get me started on arming teachers. My daughter is a teacher, she signed up to teach not brandish a gun. What do they expect the teacher to do? Wear the gun in a holster all day? If it's locked in a cabinet or desk drawer, the teacher doesn't stand a chance of retrieving the gun before the assassin guns down the classroom.
The one that infuriates me is they won't even change the age limit from 18 to 21. It doesn't make sense that you can't buy a beer but you can buy an assault weapon. At 18 the maturity level of a boy still has a long way to go. I could go on, but I don't know the solution to get through to the opposition. Maybe they should show us the pictures of the mangled children that had to be identified by DNA. Let us see the true horror those parents must face. Rip off the blinders, the grotesque stark pictures might get through.

I'm betting that you could provide an excellent Fanstory post to outline the points and the thoughts you have shared in this review! If you decide to, I promise I will read it.
I am always humbled by 6 stars; it's what we sort of work for here on fanstory and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. More important to me is that you get what I'm trying to say and that is, in its simplest form: "Just grow up, people. Take my life and those of your children as seriously as you take some perceived privilege granted under an obscure amendment." I loved your motorcycle analogy.
Thanks again. ann

Hello AnnMuma,
In the light of mass shootings at a school in Texas, it's a nice piece of Non-Fiction having smooth flow throughout from the beginning to the end and suggesting ways to stop such type of tragedies in future.
These lines are particularly noteworthy: "For now, it is mass shootings on the table and our first step toward reducing them is to control access to the weapons most coveted for that purpose."
Sale of Guns - NOT AT ALL!
Times have changed and we, the Americans particularly, should also change. People's safety must be left in the hands of well-equipped Police, Army, and other such forces which are to be duly controlled by the Government. Side by side, Mass awakening is a MUST!

Thanks for reading and for sharing your own views. If we, as Americans, don't start talking and listening to each other, we are dooming ourselves to failure. We must speak our piece at every opportunity -- not shout, not demand, just speak and care.
Thanks again. ann

Ann: great awareness, thoughts, and laws about guns and solutions. Too many people have gone somewhere and got shot. Loved ones are grieving. Hug your family and keep them close. flylikeaneagle

"Gun Safety Makes Sense" fills me with total awareness of America's huge problem. All seven steps here for improvement concerning gun ownership should definitely be taken. Thanks so much for this well done analysis.

Thanks for your very kind review and 6 stars that we all work for here on fanstory.
I am curious as to where do you live? I am in Texas. When I talk to my neighbor or friends, I find a lot of support for reasonable gun safety laws, but that, evidently, does not extend to the ballot box. We can't seem to elect leaders who offer anything much more than 'prayers and good thoughts'.
thanks again. ann

I live in Fairbanks AK. Gun safety in Alaska is not well supported.

Yes, I agree with what you have written. One thing that needs to happen is get help for those who need mental help. There needs to be more clinics and hospitals dealing with mental illness. If someone feels their loved one needs help, instead of facing the problem, do something quick. Thank you for the awareness.

That was an excellent piece, Ann, and I wholeheartedly agree with you. I would hate it if owning a gun was made legal in England. We have had 2 mass shootings in the last 30 years, one is Scotland and one in England. If you have a gun, and have a mad moment and use it, well we know the results. Of course people who want to get gun regardless of the law, will get one.
Well done, I thought this was a brilliant read, and I'm sure most will agree with you. :)) Sandra

This is an excellent and well-reasoned article, probably the best I have seen, and your steps towards helpful solutions are logical and practical. I am not American, but from an outsider's perspective, it would seem both impossible and impractical to try to have extreme gun control - too late now, the horse has bolted. But how any normal citizen would need an assault rifle is beyond me. The more and bigger the weaponry, it would seem the more fear. People only feel "safe" if they have more and bigger weapons - but that cycle or spiral has no end. Your other steps make common sense. More medical support for mental health issues, but strong restrictions against their access to guns. Even if they use knives they can do a lot less damage. We have quite strict gun controls here. Criminals still get them and use them, but mostly in gang wars with each other. The majority of citizens have never seen or used a gun (except maybe farmers). We feel safe and free, and I can't imagine such a different lifestyle as you are speaking of.
A very worthy piece of writing.

Thank you, Wendy. It is interesting to hear your take on gun control and gun safety from an Australian point of view. I appreciate that information. And, oh those 6 shiny stars!!! Thank you so very much. ann

I found myself nodding my head very often while reading your well-reasoned plea for the safety of your country's residents. I live in New Zealand where it was much easier to implement gun control laws than it will ever be in USA. Your gun culture is so entrenched, with impassioned zealots and political lobbying, and many separate states.
Your 7-point list makes perfect sense to me.

Thank you so much for reading and for sharing your own thoughts. We have had 8 more mass shootings since Uvalve!!!!! Is that unbelievable or what? I'm thinking maybe enough of the populace is fed up that we will be seeing new politicians in November. I so hope so. Gun safety should not be a political issue. It is a responsibility.
I understand New Zealand is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I hope to visit it some day.
Thanks for reading and commenting. ann

'Gun safety should not be a political issue. It is a responsibility.' - hear, hear.
NZ is beautiful and relatively safe... nice people, no dangerous predators, no poisonous snakes or spiders, gun control laws. Come visit! Borders are open again.
