Sorry I missed this one earlier. You have pointed out a major problem in the pet world. We always had dogs when we were younger. Age has made us give up that companionship. I miss it.

Thank you Paul. Yes, once the novelty wears off these poor pets suffer a very lonely and sad life. I appreciate your review. I will be distraught when Sunny goes.

First place for a reason! These precious fur-babies get "rescued" and when the fairy dust of "new" shakes off so often they are neglected, left alone, chained endlessly for hours in the sun... It breaks my heart.

Congrats on shining light on this!

Congrats on your win!

Thank you very much Karenina, for your kind and understanding words and for your congratulations. It breaks my heart that whenever I go into my back yard the massive dog in the house behind cries pitifully, and throws himself at the back fence. He is never taken for a walk. His "family" just yell at him to be quiet. I think that when he is not crying he is sleeping. I find it very upsetting. I talk to him through the gap under the fence (I can't see over). When I walk Sunny, my dog, we pass so many dogs who come to their gates or look out from a window and just whine - left by themselves all day every day. Such owners should never get a pet if they can't provide love and company for it. These poor animals are very vulnerable, so dependent on their humans. All they want is a bit of time, company and love. (Sorry for my rant.)
    Thank you again.

Do not be sorry. Our pets have always been beloved members of our family. We are their humans... We take that joy and responsibility in equal measure!

Yes, A joy and a responsibility, the giving and receiving of love. Thank you.

I agree, animals are precious, being social animals they need companionship and love, acceptance and companionship, as much as wel do, poor people, all our animals are part of our household.. beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

Thank you very much Roy. If only everyone offered the same thoughtful care and love to their pets.

Very sad lament indeed. Sounds like what I know so many animals and pets I am familiar with most assuredly have to endure. So depressing yet exhilarating to visit a dog pound. All they want is a friend. I wish I could take them all.

Sad but true

Thank you Gary. Lovely response. Yes, I am the same. It?s better not to choose to have a pet than to subject it to a lifetime of neglect. Leave them for ones who will offer love and time.

This poem, I Speak for Them, has a powerful message for all of us. The challenge calls for a free verse so you may get some pushback from the sponsors.

Thanks Bill for reviewing. I did check what constituted free verse and found that internal rhyme did not seem to be excluded although end rhymes and regular metre were not acceptable generally, although occasional end rhyme was okay). It wasn?t very clear about what is or isn?t acceptable so I entered with the thought that if necessary the committee could dq, but they didn?t. So I hope the sponsors are okay with it too. Thanks again.

This looks like a poem I might write, stylistically with all that internal rhyming, and subject matter too with an awareness of animals' feelings. Therefore, I have to say it is an excellent poem, haha..... no, truly it is, and I expect it to be a runaway success for you in the voting.
I think I know who this is - I know you walk your dog every day and you have mentioned the lonely neighbour dog before.
Your point is well made that it is unfair to own a pet, especially a dog, if a person is unable or unwilling to be a caring companion to it.

Thank you for reviewing. I appreciate all your words and understanding. Every time I go out into the back yard he cries constantly and throws himself at the back fence. I talk to him through the gap under the fence, as I can?t see over. It makes me sad, and quite cross when they are inside watching tv (I can hear it) and just yell at him every so often to be quiet. He?s a very big dog, but sad and lonely.

Oh that breaks my heart too. So unfair. So selfish. Poor fellow - a miserable life indeed.

I agree one hundred percent. Best friends. They rarely complain, and don't argue with your opinion. Where else can you find someone similarly? And then there comes their death. Too often taken by the vet to be administer a fatal inoculation. Be sure to be in attendance. That will show them the love they have given you.

Thank you Tom for your very supportive words. Yes, when my previous beautiful dog had to be euthanised the vet came to my home and I held her while he gave her a double anaesthetic. We sat on the back lawn on a beautiful sunny day and I held her head in my hands. She knew she was loved. And she had also shown she was ready, knew it was time. I still miss her.

Each time I hear of such love being shared, I tear up immediately. Thanks for sharing.

Ciao mystery poet , you now have 5 votes!

I totally agree people get pets and all is great when they are puppies or kittens but as they grow their interest often wanes.

Especially canines need to feel part of the family.. they suffer left at home alone all day .. they are social creatures.

Some are even cooped up in an apartment.. it a crime , indeed.

Having a pet is like having a child (that never grows up ), you need to be there for them.

This is an excellent entry, but I felt that it was not exactly a free verse poem. For example, in this poem you rhyme 'day' with 'play' and 'care' with 'there.' Other than that, good luck in the contest!

Yes you are right - there is internal rhyme which is okay in free verse, although end rhymes are discouraged, along with regular metre. I did check the rules before I entered it, and the CEC passed it too. Thank you very much for reviewing (and also for your question, as I do think it is important for rules to be followed). I appreciate also your good wishes!
