Another fine poem, Gypsy----that must have been terrifying; glad he made it out alive, but mentally scarred fo sure. What's happening to America? The Goddamned Republicans won't do anything--they're not human beings, apperantly

Your words capture the impact of this shooting. I am glad your son is okay, school shootings have been going on for so long, it is time for them to stop. Your tank brings forth emotions and feelings.

Hello Gypsy,
Your poem is well written and presented and is in great form. Nice touches of alliteration and the contrast between innocence and evil ('angels/sin') is well done. You chose the perfect word 'senseless' for what happened on Tuesday. I just can't comprehend WHY anyone would do such a thing. I'm heartbroken for all those involved and affected by Ramos' evil deed.
The information you give and statistics you quote in your author notes are horrific and I'm so sorry that your son suffered such trauma.
Sending love, Debra x

Hi Gypsy, a timely poem. No parent should ever have to bury a child. It's difficult enough if a child dies from a disease, etc., but to know that you child was slaughtered is beyond unbearable. I heard that the children had to be identified through DNA. I'm assuming this means that the "monster" shot the children in the face.

I'm sorry that you had to go through a similar ordeal. Thankfully, your son survived, but not unscathed. We had a little cousin present the day of the Sandy Hook, Newtown, CT shootings. Another tragedy. Gypsy, I don't know what the answer is, but this has to stop, and STOP now.

A timely tanka. Appropriate photo. Thank you for your author's note.
Well done. I'm sorry is this shooting brings back bad memories for you and your son. Be well ~ stay safe. LateBloomer

Thank you very much, late bloomer, I appreciate your extensive and kind feedback. We are doing alright. That was a long time ago. I asked my son how he was doing and he said he moved on. Still, what a horrible and shameful tragedy...all the children lost and families destroyed lives. I hope our government pass some gun control laws. There's no reason for civilians to own ar15s. We also need better background laws....so much more but I'm not an expert.

In the news today, a woman that died in the shooting (teacher?), now her husband had a heart attack. Their four children have no parents. Tears in heaven. LateBloomer

Devastating.

I am so sorry your son experienced that! Every patient's nightmare, you must have been frozen with fear and dread!

That your son is a grown man and today we are yet again weeping... Staring at twenty-one crosses and listening to the incessant chatter of politicians....

That is insanity!

That my eight year old grandson returned to school this week, after recovering from covid...

To spend the day learning shelter in place drills and listening to school adjustment counselors "explain" the term "active shooter."--

I have no words!

That he hugged me today and asked why he can't just stay home so he won't be " shot dead." leaves me breathless.

Innocence is dead.

Ah, but the profit margin on AR-15 assault weapons.... So very promising!

Our youth pay for it.

A life sentence of fear...

Bless your powerful Tanka.

Bless your voice!

Karenina

My heart breaks for your grandson and all the kids that have to learn school shooting drills. My grandson stars school in August...it's so scary.

    Big hugs, little sister.

What a nightmare for your and your son!! I looked up the Cleveland Elementary shooting and I found this one:
January 29, 1979 Grover Cleveland Elementary School Shootings, California. The shooter was a girl named Brenda Spencer and she was famed for saying, "I hate Mondays." Then I saw there was another Cleveland Elementary School shooting in 1989 in Stockton (ten years after the San Diego one.) That's the one with Purdy. So horrible!!
Thanks for sharing and remembering all those victims. How is your son taking this latest shooting? Appreciate you sharing!

the song, I Don't Like Mondays" is a song by Irish new wave group the Boomtown Rats about the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School shooting in San Diego. It came from Brenda Spencer's saying.

I completely agree. Let's pray hard for gun law reforms! I think any store online or brick&mortar which sells to someone who does a mass shooting should have their ability to sell guns/ammo permanently!

I wrote a poem back in 2016, and waited for an appropriate time to release it, when the 2nd amendment was made it was the revolutionary war, was on, but only muskets were available, how come people can easily obtain these destructive weapons, they can be used to one thing, and one thing only. Gypsy, it is truly disgusting, blessings Roy

I agree with you. It's time for gun control laws. The Republicans part don't want to and are stopping the process that's so badly needed. We have a useless senate. Democrats want to do it but they don't have the votes. It's madness and so scary. My 4 year old starts pre kindergarten and we are so scare to send him to school...sigh...Thank you, Roy.

What happened at your son's school was well explained, Gypsy.
Your words painted a horrible picture of then and now. Your notes,
though poignant, added another layer of info to your well written
poem. The image and color scheme were perfect. I live 2 1/2
hours from the location. I have thought of nothing else since the
shooting. However, I believe you and your family have been dealing
with a school shooting for a long time. Take care.
Respectfully, Jan

Gypsy, This is a great Tanka poem you penned about the tragedy that shouldn't have happened. You used great words and imagery from the picture. I am so sorry your son saw what he did. That had to be horrible. How is he doing now? This world is getting worse and worse! love and blessings, Teri

My son is a grown man now. I don't think he thinks about it anymore, he keeps that inside, but I think watching the shooting news must bring bad memories.
