A wonderful story and how blessed you are to have these memories. I believe it is important to write them down so that future generations have an opportunity to know something about from whence they came. You know the old saying, 'One never truly dies in this world until his name is no longer spoken.' Good post. ann

How I wished I had more knowledge of my grandparents and beyond than I do, but I don't so I'll have to leave it in God's hands. I just love the fact that you can, and it's a marvellous, because I've really started the family here, I guess I'm the first, perhaps my grandchildren will start to record our family biography, beautifully written Beth, blessings Roy
Typo : Shortly after Eugene('s) death,

If you are really curious, have your DNA done and join Ancestry. You'll be amazed at what you will learn about everyone. I never dreamed there was so much information out there. Thanks for reviewing my story.

In those days, women often married for security. My grandmother did the same. It's amazing your grandmother had a good sense of humor, given all she went through. I wonder if women today to stand up to those times.

Thanks for a great review. Grandma would have married for love if her brothers and stayed out of it. I pretty sure her marriages, especially the last, was for security.

This is quite a story. You were an only child but your family's history was jam packed with children. You were fortunate to have grandparents, especially Grandmothers'. I was not that fortunate.
Well done Beth. Nancy:)

Grandparent meant a lot in my life. I feel bad for those who have never known them. People are all different though. Some mention not having caring grandparents. Thanks for reading my story.

Thanks for sharing this heart-warming memory of your grandmother, Beth. She sounds like a woman to be admired, even thought she was never able to do what she really wanted to do. Well done.

A few suggestions: "...ranging in age from (ages) 5 to 17. - no need for this word

"With my Bob's original 10 children" - either just Bob's or my Grandpa Bob's

"Mom seemed to think (her) mother and father had a happy marriage, but I believe it was a choice she(Grandma) made because she felt she had no other (choice). - no need to use 'choice' twice. It's implied the second time.

I can tell your grandma was a wonderful lady. She lived in a different era, than we did, and things were different. I was lucky to know both of my grandparents. My Mom's mom was born in Wales.

Thank you for the review and comments. My husband's Shelby family was from Wales as well as my Davis family. I felt lucky to have three of my grandparents until I grew up and got married. My husband never saw any of his.

The many twists and turns of life, I'm glad your grandmother was an important part of your life, and she lived to hold your first child. This one hits a soft spot for me because this week I learned that I have a 42 year-old daughter I didn't know I had, and two more grandbabies. We almost missed out on knowing each other. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, congratulation on you new additions to your family. That sounds like something worth writing about. Have you met them yet. I love to hear more about how that came to be. Thanks for reading my story.

Well, Beth, it's a story that would be embarrassing from the beginning. But as we all know, boys will be boys, and in truth, girls will be girls too. LOL. I'm sorry for all the wasted time and not knowing, but I'm thankful it wasn't a total bust. We haven't met in person yet, just phone calls and pictures. We live four hours apart but are making plans to spend time together soon.

I'm curious as to how they found you. I hope it will turn out to be a great reunion and you'll find you have a lot in common.

Just talking, it's amazing how much we have in common. The daughter hasn't had a life I would have hoped for her, but it wasn't terrible either. She had siblings, but never felt like she belonged, and they look nothing alike. Her grandmother told her before she died that I might be her father, so she went to Ancestry. There data base showed a close match to a cousin of mine in California, and then my daughter. Things went from there. She looks just like my mother at her age, and her two children look just like my sons and daughter. I'm anxious to see where things go from here. :-)

I'm on ancestry and It seems I have a first cousin who doesn't know she is s related. The one who is working with her DNA is afraid to tell her the one she thinks is her father isn't related to her. Instead it is one of my cousins. DNA is amazing.

Perfect! You described America and the people of yesteryear. We called them pioneer stock, which you never hear about anymore. Hollywood has killed the desire of learning about real America and its real people.
Well done, Beth.

It's so good that you had her in your life even though you probably didn't appreciate getting scolded. What a hard life your grandmother had and yet she seemed to make the most of things and I'm glad she sprang for those encyclopedias for you! I hope you read them to her!
Suggestions:
She never stopping regretting the fact her (stopped)
she [had] no fear of dying

Thank you, Helen. I wore the encyclopedias out looking up things that interested me and writing reports in school. Grandma looked up things she was interested in to. She didn't stop learning all she could just because she didn't go to school past five year.
