There are reasons why veterans of war do not want to speak of particular parts of war that they personally experienced. A product of wartime battles often result in killing someone, sometimes the person killed is unintended. To kill someone who was not trying to kill you is a terrible burden to have to carry around for 20, 30 or even 40 years. It is a burden not easily carried or endured.

So true, so sad, so sick. It is a ruthless form of evil madness. No human being, in their right mind, wants to kill another. The results are life long and devastating, on both sides.

I heard Russian soldiers were sabotaging their own equipment. They don't want to do this, but they know what will happen if they refuse. I imagine they'll be haunted by it for the rest of their lives. Good luck in the contest.

Absolutely true, and I am sure there are many thinking exactly that, but they are caught up in it, and to defy their leader would mean certain death. Your poem shows compassion and insight, and I am sure it will do well in the contest. I hope so, as it deserves to.
