A clever way of describing looking at your reflection in a mirror. I like the syllable count, and the fact you view yourself as being "refined by life", not jaded. Very positive.

I thought this poem was a delight to read and we all seem to change into our mothers, however hard we try not to lol. This poem is a well thought out piece. Thank you for sharing and take care.

This poem holds a great surprise... that when some of us are lucky and wise we realize we've become our parents. It's a lovely reminder that genes are strong! I imagine it can also be a way of feeling that parent is really still with us. How wonderful! Thanks!

This is an extremely clever Senryu that I enjoyed reading very much. I had great fun looking at which parts of your mother's face didn't change, and imagining where you are on the scale of refinement.

Good luck with your mother Senryu entry. It reminded me of my father when he said, "your mother will never be gone whilst you are alive." I didn't think much about it. I do now at age 77 I am the spitting image of my mother. Thanks for sharing and especially the double photo of mum. It gave us a look at changes over the years. K xx

This poem is amazing! I love the images you included, and the "double edged sword" reference in the author's notes section. Your poem truly gives one something to think about.

Ma's Mirror
by NANCY V. FORREST

Hello, Nancy,

Sometimes moms and daughters look the same as they grow older. I don't see it with my daughters but people always say that. What a beautiful haiku for the mother event. Good syllable count and connection between lines. Nice presentation. I would change the font color to white so it's easier to read. Well done!

I loved this one! Haiku looks like it's so easy, but anyone who's tried knows that it's tough to express an actual thought in those few syllables. Thank you for posting; your mom has such a fun glint in her eye!

If you squint, the changes that age brings are diminished and the similarities between these two portraits of the same woman become noticeable. I think 'wistful' in the first line is not the best word choice, since it tends to suggest regret or a longing for something from the past. Is that likely in a young woman?
The smiles in both photos are slightly different; on second thought, the younger portrait may indeed be wistful.
"Tempered and refined" are generous words to describe what life does to us, but they might well be characteristics of the older woman. She certainly harbors a gold nugget of welcome and good will in her smile.

Wistful was true of her---she was intellectual and an artist at a time and place when that was not considered important in girls and women. At that time of her life, she looked for acceptance when there was little to be found. SHe made peace with her reality in emerged a strong individual. Thank you for your thoughtful response.

This was excellently written. I smiled when I looked at my own mother's picture on Mother's day and saw much that reminded me of myself-then looked in the mirror at the same.
