Attention can be much more important to a youngster than material things especially if it is given by someone they are fond of.
With his father fighting for the Confederacy, no doubt he thought little of Lincoln. Many people never considered Lincoln a "friend of the South."
"smoke house" should be smokehouse.
"the in woods" should probably be in the woods.
Able to do what needed doing best describes him. A lesson many others could well learn these days You simply do not find many people like him anymore.

It is nice to know you don't necessarily read for the reward. I appreciate you pointing out those spags in this older one. Yes, I agree me grandpa was special and you don't fine people like him these days.

Beautiful story! Grandparents have an opportunity to share love and wisdom and, often, time in a way parents cannot. Conversely, grandchildren have the opportunity to learn from watching grandparents and your grandfather's character and determination had positive effects on many lives. Good story. ann

It's funny how we live in cycles, where we disdain old things and old ways, and then come back around to them. It sounds like a place half the people would love, and the other half wouldn't even visit. I'm in the lovin' half.

Thank for a nice review. I love to able to go back again but all traces of that lifestyle in my family vanished in the late fifties.

Oh, Beth, you were so blessed knowing such good hard working people who lived such a simple life. I also remember those times as well with my grandparents. Sorry not have been active more. Just not feeling like something alive. No doubt prayers for my friend did the trick.

Thank you Chuck, It is good to see you. I was concerned and will still keep the prayers going. Yes, those were the days and the I miss those people from my past. Writing about them make me feel like they are still around. I appreciate the six stars.

I enjoyed reading this story. Those were some hard working people. They appreciated life. The things they distribute today would be put to shame. People did not care about brand named items. Kids today are spoiled rotten. They have no clue what real work is either. I relate to this story. My grandparents worked so hard. And they never said a word about being tired. When they were exhausted. I bet the moment their bodies hit the feather mattress, they fell asleep. May they all rest in peace. Thank you.
