I like the eight syllable lines. Shorter lines resonate well with rhymes closer together (for me anyway). The poem stays on point. The images are clear. The conversational language adds warmth. The last couplet is a nice wrap up of the narrative.

Very nice Jaybird!
I like to judge poems on their hypnotic affect.. whether or not I lose track of time while reading.
The only part in the piece where the timing tripped me up.. awakening me from my trance was:
"We must be brave, must face each day,
there really is no other way"
..something about the "other" I can't quite nail down.
That's all tho..

As ever, Jay, you bless us with wise words to live by. Each of us got here with the help of our friends and loved ones, be they long deceased or close by. We never really lose them! IN line two, did you possibly mean "strength?" I looked for a meaning for "strench" but could not find one!
