Congrats on your second-place finish. This is an amazing story. Those boys were such daredevils, taking off like that at such a young age. He was strong to have survived Dachau. It was really impressive that he came to the conclusion that he would never hate another person in his life. Great story of Paladin's art and the art of sandpainting. judi

Hi Terry, very good. It is amazing how children of David's time roamed the country and were very resourceful. My dad was one of them too. He ran away at 10 years old. David was a renaissance man before he became an artist. The following peaked my interest:

His mother was a Navajo on the Arizona Reservation. His father was a caucasian Roman Catholic Priest. Shortly after his birth, his mother became a nun.

Question ... What was the family dynamic? I am assuming that they never married because David's mother went on to become a Nun. Did she give David up at birth to family or did she care for him for a few years before joining a convent? Or were they married on the Reservation, and the priest continued living as a Roman Catholic priest, and David's mother went onto to become a Nun. Terry, I almost thought that was going to be the story.

Of note:
In short, the German doctor had saved David's life.
(The same was true of my father.)

And:
He again met Ted Keck, his German friend from the boat to Australia. Ted was now a German officer. Ted exchanged David's identity tags with another prisoner's, and David was sent to a work camp instead of the death camp.

(A lot of id tags were changed during the war by both sides. I read a story where an American soldier switched his tags with a dead man so that his very, very poor family would get his insurance money. He disappeared for decades to hide the truth before returning home. It was a lot easier to disapper in the 40's.)

I also liked: He received a scholarship to the prestigious Chicago Art Institute.

(David became the Man he was destined to be.)

There's nothing like a true story. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck. LateBloomer

LateBloomer, thank you for your wonderful review. I am not aware of any records about David's parents. He did live with family members before he ran away from the reservation. Thank you, Terry.

Hello Terry Broxson,
It's a nice piece of Biographical Non-Fiction beautifully depicting David's story.
Impressive wording; Captivating flow throughout from the beginning to the end.
Interesting and Inspirational also!

I almost skipped this entry because I am not particularly interested in Indian art and that is what is sounded like the piece was going to be about. However, I am always enthralled by tales from WWII.

This is one of the most horrific tales I have read, but they all are, aren't they? It is a wonder anyone survived that atrocity. I only hope we, as a nation and as the world, do not have to go through that again with the situation in Ukraine.

Very descriptive and visual, almost too much so. But a good read, nonetheless. Thank you.

Wow! Your bio prompted me to look up David, and I was intrigued by the Ximu audio, and fascinated by his inspired paintings. Read of his shaman initiation and the visions he experienced while under the influence of a drug he never identified. Although his descriptions of the visions were undoubtedly influenced by the drug, his perceptions of the beginnings of the universe made sense and conformed to the interpretations of modern science.
A remarkable man, to have even survived all he went through, and then to paint in such depth.
Thanks for this, great work!

This is a riveting story made more impactful because of being a true one. It also has a strong "lesson learned" element having to do with perceptions. An easy read.

"The Creator's Hand" is a fascinating brief biography of a man who uses his wits and adaptability to find his was through interesting and sometimes very difficult situations. We are tough creatures, especially those of us who grow up in a forest of adversities. It is this toughness that sustains us, not the 'Creator's Hand,' a metonym that bespeaks a God who apparently either keeps his hands in his (His!) pockets or it too busy juggling with the Cosmos to notice the terrible tribulations of these intelligent beings who struggle so valiantly with an existence that is tuned to the question, "why?"

I'm sure ...David's story could make a good book, especially if John Steinbeck or James Lee Burke had a shot at it.

You are right about James Lee Burke, a great wordsmith! Terry.
reply by Frank Malley on 05-May-2022
J.L.Burke's daughter, Alifair, is writing for quite a while. I read a bit of her early on and wasn't turned on, but I should look at some more recent books by her. Her dad will hopefully produce some more, but he's getting old; I hope he's enjoying his life.

I think all things are possible if one is bold, and if someone interceded on his behalf, like his nun mother or priest father, who knows, God is a forgiving and gracious God, and justifies my faith in Him, boldness is a fruit of faith, and this man was given repeated grace in his life, my wife and I think this is fantastic Terry, blessings Roy
