Your story is well written, Mary. You gave readers many
important details. There's good flow and pacing. Your
words were carefully chosen. Your words are emotional
from several standpoints. I believe you did the best you
could at the time. However in looking back, you are
questioning your actions. These kind of decisions are
never easy. I believe writing about it is helpful to you.
Respectfully, Jan

I can understand your pain, we all remember things we did that we shouldn't have. It's not until we are in that position that we realise we failed them badly. I'm so sorry you are feeling this way, but I believe your Nana is looking down on you and loves you. I hope mine do, too.

You have this posted double, if you take a look, when the story is finished, it starts again. It's easy to go back and delete that second part. Good luck in the contest, it's very sad, very honest, and a great entry. :) Sandra xx

You were just a child and you need to forgive yourself. I have regrets too about my Grandma as we stayed with her whilst my parents were away on holiday once and we gave her hell, but she continued to make us meals and care for us. I did repay her when I was married with children of my own as I invited her for lunch every Sunday and pampered her. My Grandma was hated by my Mother and I felt sorry for her because she had a hard life bringing up two children on her own as my Grandad died young. Life was hard back then. Your story is endearing Mary and brought a tear to my eye as you remember your Grandma with fondness now. We understand their plight once we are grown up, a fine story Mary, love Dolly x

Thank you Dolly for your very kind words. You are right, these ladies had a tough going. My grandmother came to the US with five children in tow looking for work after her husband was killed in an accident.
Best wishes and thank you very much

Great poem for the contest. For some reason, the post repeated itself in duplicate! Still, a haunting, poignant, honest, authentic confessional post that tries to put to rest the guilt you have felt for so many years for various things that happened to your Nana. Thank you for sharing this personal and difficult post.

Grandmothers try to do their very best. I'm so sorry that you are looking back on your days of welcoming your grandmother to your home. I'm sure she forgave you but I'm also sure that you could have welcomed her with warmth and open arms.

Mary this is so beautiful. I believe you have said it all with this and we should believe she has heard you. You have repeated the body, I'm not sure if it is intentional? It doesn't seem to be. I have scrolled down to finish reading and the ending is beautiful as well.

This really broke my heart, the conflicts and inner turmoil of the writer and the grandmother who sacrificed being a caregiver all of her life come through to the reader. I'm sure she knows you are sorry.

Dear Nana
by Mary Vigasin

Excellent poem for your Nana. My grand kids call me Nina :)

I know how you feel. Sometimes I feel bad about the way I took care of my kids, they say I'm a good mom but I feel I could have done better. You were a child. It's not your fault.

I fear going to a rest home. I would cry too. But it's hard to take care of an ill elder grandparent.

I think you repeated some of your story. I read the same paragraphs twice. Check it out.
Well done.

My short observation is that you were young, and the young tend not to be thoughtful, but it looks like she was like my nana in England, who had a really rough life when young, and now when I think back, we were parted with her when young, coming to Australia with my parents. But I think we understand how important honour is when older. Beautifully written dear Mary, Roy
