Oh my, he is a bit extreme in his reactions to her words. Your last paragraph is a bit of a shocker. You did a great job and I always look forward to your work. Shirley

I thought the use of 'inhumane' was a bit much so fair game! lol

Hello G :)

Hah! This is just too funny!
Well, written, tongue in cheek and absolutely entertaining from start to finish.
To be fair, it can be irritating to receive a mere 'thanks' in return for ages spent writing a thorough and constructive review. To receive a response containing words like 'inhumane' would maybe set me off too! - Love that marmite and a Celine Dion CD were included in the bag of torture!
Thanks for a fun read.
Best wishes as always, Debra :)

You can't know how tempted I was to give this piece a three!
Yes, the directions are clear. And yes, some writing deserves less than a five. (Just not any of mine!) (straight face here 8-") I was once awarded a four, and the only criticism was that the reviewer didn't agree with the content. Now 'that' deserved a trip to his house!
Consider this, FanStory is not college. Reviewers are neither professors, or publishing agents/editors. We are fellow contributors.
I have, on occasion, merely replied with a 'thank you' for what might have taken considerable effort, just as I have received 'thank you' for the same. Such is life. At the very worst, I have scratched a few from my 'ever reviewing again' list.
I've changed my mind. I think I'll give you a two and sit at my door and watch for you. LOL
Best wishes.

Actually some of the reviewers are traditionally published authors, professors / teachers and editors. This wasn't so much about the reviewing as the way in which we use words.

I remember a few years back folk were referring to others as Grammar Nazis. Quite shocking to equate someone who points out some punctuation errors to someone who was complicit in gassing 6000000 million people...

Same thing for claiming the same thing as 'inhumane'... lol

    Many thanks as always, Wayne.

I accept that yours was 'tongue-in-cheek', as was mine. I posted a sarcastic piece on some of these stupid contests and received similar rebuke.
    Best to ya.

I also use relatively true ratings, but a few pieces of work really do deserve to be rated outstanding. I never know what else to write in such cases. Shuld I explain why? to me it's obvious. The subject has to be thrilling / original in some way, but also the style of writing has to be impeccable. When the two come together, as a reviewer I am in heaven (I always read twice to make sure I haven't made a mistake!). Thank you.

I always use the site guidelines. To be fair, I rarely get bad responses but 'inhumane' is something else. lol many thanks. G

so what do you do if you rate something one or two? review to offer help or walk on by? (I have never I think given less than three)

Great story as usual, quite Steven King-ish, but one that may scare people into giving less than 5 stars! Especially to you, though that is unlikely to happen anyway. Phew, I got out of that one.
I do wonder about the sense of having a 6-star scale as people will take anything less than 4 personally. That's human nature I s'pose? I have only done it once and survived.
Maybe I will take my photo off now though......

The thing that gets me is when folk give out bland 5 stars but then believe when they get them they are completely deserved rather than realising folk are doing the same thing to them. lol All the best G

Oh, boy. This is both hilarious and highly disturbing, and explains exactly why I've developed a rating system based primarily on five and six stars. If I feel brave and use the Fan Story's method of rating, I get all kinds of hate mail and revenge ratings. I do throw out the occasional four stars, but it's usually in regards to how a specific author's post relates to their other work, and not to everyone else's.

That's not a bad way approach. I stick to the site guidelines but then folk know that. G

and as the sun set, and darkness crept first, and finally rushed in, this dark tale is beyond the pale, no pun intended, but used just as well, as you can tell. As usual, you have a unique way of writing to get certain points across. Well done.

Oops. I almost said? thank you. Might it have been dangerous if those two words stood alone? Inhumane, I would not like 2b treated. 😎

Hello, G!
Ain't life grand when you go about the business of attempting to "help" another writer, and instead, are attacked?
I loved the pace and "tongue-in-cheek" humor expressed in your well-crafted piece; however, it sparks a great deal of truth!
How I would love to speak face to face with one or two current members of the site and let them know how I feel about their reviews/replies to my work and/or theirs.
One member, in particular, read a work of mine, postured that it should rate six stars. But after going through all of my reviews, he decided that my one response to another member, no longer on the site, was racist, and thus he gave it five stars.
RACIST?
Didn't matter how much I attempted to defend my honor and clear his misconception, he refused to make further comments.
I no longer review his work...
(Don't know how I manage to get up every morning...)

All I do know is that I very much enjoyed your offering, and it made me smile...

Thank you for sharing!

Yep, some of them are completely barmy. Someone called me a Grammar Nazi once... well I wrote a piece about that too! lol That's a really insulting turn of phrase. G

Well, you told the story well but you dragged me through this as if I were the one who had done you wrong! I wished the story over as I read anxiously for the humor or the point of the story to be laid out for me. I understood the theme but your lengthy list of devices to be used on her bothered me and led me to believe you were going to harm her with me watching! I began thinking to myself, where is the violence warning on this post? The end was a relief and I saw that you were making a point of not using words unless we can back them up. Good point!
Thanks for enlightening me on my word usage and being careful what I say.
Jesse

Many thanks, Jesse. funnily enough, my wife had the same reaction but thought the point was well made. I have a barometer at home in her! G

Thank you for sharing. I can see this happening. You told a great story and I felt I was watching it play out.

He always liked to give detailed, and thorough critiques, although they weren't always appreciated. (I have only been muted by two people on this site. Both of them didn't appreciate my review. I have never given anybody a horrible review. I've always started with positive and then pointed out a few errors. The first person who muted me isn't with us any longer. I just got muted for the second time last week. This person is a horrible writer and makes numerous mistakes. When I couldn't find anything positive, I didn't review. This time I pointed out three and was muted. I guess my question is why join the site if you don't want to learn? Sorry, I just had to ramble a little.)

I'll bet it was Bob (mastery) he muted me too on numerous occasions because I wouldn't review how he told me I should... Bless his soul. G

Yes, Bob was my first and only review until last week. LOL
